Talon and I drove over to Dubuque today for a class for the Utah concealed carry permit. We passed - the shooting part was pretty easy. So now we can get our paperwork in and be happy.
Haven’t seen any hummingbirds as of yet. The woodpeckers have a young’un as do the turtledoves, saw them earlier today. Blue jays been squawking for their peanuts, one seems smaller than the other, so maybe they are on the comeback trail, too. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for the hummers, we sure enjoy them.
Way to go JenB; never thought for a minute that you wouldn’t pass. How long does it take for the paperwork to come through?
“An armed society is a polite society”.
Up to 60 days. We still have to get fingerprint cards and some other materials together.
The test was ten shots each at 5, 7, and 10 yards. Just a “21 out of 30 in the target area” qualified. Talon got 30 and I missed one but my group was better than it has been so I’m happy.
I was expressing my frustration with myself that I didn’t think I could finish the lawn before the fun activities of the day commenced and didn’t feel entitled to participate in said fun activities unless the lawn was mowed...
I did it as fast as I could, though - about an hour and forty-five minutes with no stops, which I think is a record for that durned lawn. Now I need a shower...and the I’ll be over with the brat. ;-)
Good Shooting.
Missouri is semi-auto and revolver shooting. They class had glocks and rugers to use if you didn’t one of the required types. Quite a few folks only had one or the other and had to use the instructors guns to complete the course of fire.
OB, that's the story over here too. They promised not to mess with our Second Amendment "hunting rights", so there was plenty of "acceptable" firearms in the "nice" section of the local gun shop. But I noticed a distinct lack of self esteem coming from the "dark side" of the store, where the EBRs hang out. I was determined to rescue at least one from a life of "unsuitable for sporting purposes", and laid out the plastic.
That's a roundabout way of introducing tonight's Saturday Night Gun Pron [tm]. I've adopted a DPMS LRT-SASS. So far, all I have is a baby picture that I carry in my wallet.
Not much to say, I haven't even torn it down yet. I do know, however, that it has 53 linear inches of "cheese grater" that needs covering, and the DPMS "bikini" covers won't work like I want, so I have a bunch of Magpul solid rail covers, like those on the Mossberg, on order. Other minor items will be a better sling, and a Dewey coated cleaning rod and rod guide.
The Storm hard case (mismarked by the dealer, he sold it to me below cost) is a new brand for me. I have Pelicans for my precision instruments, and swear by them. The Pelican is glass-reinforced resin, while the Storm is solid plastic. Both are pricey, but I haven't priced the Pelican brand lately.
My best buys on Pelicans came at the closing minutes of a gun show, when a dealer starts to contemplate lugging that big ol' case back to the truck, only to haul it in to the next show he goes to. It's a good time to do him a favor and take it off his hands at a decent price.
About the only other things I can say about the DPMS come right off the spec sheet. 19" stainless steel fluted bull barrel, free-float handguard, target trigger, and a Magpul adjustable stock.
It's one thing to "adopt" a rifle like this, but now the anxiety starts. What if it doesn't like ball ammo? Will I have to feed it gourmet match .308 all the time? And what kind of scope should I get? It has potential far beyond the traditional 4x scope for a designated rifleman's weapon. 6x12? Mil-dot? Leupold? Some fancy foreign brand?
It's almost like picking out a college for a kid you just brought home from the hospital. Decisions, decisions....
Oh, that is seriesly a fine piece of weaponry. You were able to get it set up like that? Magpull stock and all?
You’re a fine man, Winmag, adopting a wayward weapon like that and taking it under your wing. We can see several build alongs and range sessions in your, and hopefully, our future. Kudos.
"Box stock", except for the factory box itself. A $7.99 Dockosil plastic cheapie. My self-esteem would have suffered if I didn't buy a decent case on the spot.
Very well done, yup, the Storm case is a quite a step up from ‘issue plastic box’. Wouldn’t want your self-esteem to take a beatin’ from the wallyworld box they included for a fine arm like you have. :-)
nice rifle... nice case...
those are the kinda conundrums I prefer...
Having fun I see...
you and me brother...
swaged about 1500 of once-fired 5.56 this week... adds tuh muh collection... ready tuh load...
... Utah?
Utah, like Florida, issues a “non-resident” CCW permit. That means that in states that have reciprocity with Utah (Like Texas and 30ish others) Talon and I will be able to carry concealed.
We can’t in Iowa because we don’t have an Iowa permit, but even when we get that, it’s not recognized in a lot of states that the Utah one is.
Also, the Utah one doesn’t come with stupid restrictions about “you must carry $500 in cash for this permit to be valid” like our current sheriff does. And we have it better than some counties. Dubuque basically doesn’t issue permits at all unless you’re buds with the sheriff.
Huh? What's that for, bribes?
Last time I heard that kind of silliness was when I was entering high school and pledging a girl's club. We pledges had to always carry gum and mints in case an older member decided to ask for some. We also had to always carry a clove of garlic with us, so my cousin and I decided to put the gum and mints in a little pouch, in which we also carried the garlic clove. We ended the summer with almost all of the gum and mints we had at the beginning. ;o)
No. The rationale is that only people with something valuable to protect should be allowed to carry. So in our county, a human life is worth less than $500 apparently.
And no, the fact that I’m carrying a $500 gun doesn’t count.
Some counties in IA are worse. The guy teaching the class mentioned one where the sheriff writes it “Invalid in incorporated city limits” (!)
