The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I’m so sorry to hear about Nana, but she was ready to go, and no one can ask for better than that! You’re all in my prayers.

I don’t know for sure. Some 44 Rem Mag levers can also fire 44 Special, but wouldn’t it be marked that way? Dunno. Maybe that’s a question for Winchester. An e-mail back to them with the model/serial no. would probably get an authoritative answer.

I forgot the round existed so it never occurred to me to find this out before, but can I put .44 Special through a .44 mag leveraction?

The case of the .44 mag is about 1/16th longer than .44 Spl. It should work fine, because, as with a shotgun, the round is pushed onto a carrier, which raises it to barrel level. The bolt then pushes it into the chamber, with the extractor hooking the rim at the last moment. Shotgun shells and revolver ammo both headspace on the case rim, so cartridge length, unless way off, should have no trouble feeding or ejecting.

Depending on the rifle weight, recoil should be easy. More than .223, but a lot less than the old 30-30.

I’m so sorry, Corin. I know you were expecting it anytime, but even so, it’s hard.

Will be praying for all of you - especially the Mrs.

Yup, the .44 Special is the basis for the .44 Magnum; only difference is a bit of case length, sixteen on an inch IIRC. I’m sure Winmag will know.

You may want to consider just reloading the .44Mag. You can make any power load you want. Lead or Jacketed etc.

Doesn’t have to be a full bore G’nad type reloading set up. Dillion makes a heck of a reloader though. You can do your .45, .40 and 9mm with only a change of dies.

A LeeLoader will do the job, one round at a time. I have loaded lots of ammo that way.

We’re going to start reloading real soon now. Price of ammo is just too much. Until we finish the other half of the basement though, it will be tough to have a good place for it. We’ll manage.

Thanks folks for all your kind words and prayers. Nana went peacefully. Mrs. and her sister were there with her and Mrs. was able to read Scripture and pray with her. She was ready to go.

Other sisters are here and they’re talking through details which will probably stretch through the weekend. I’ll check in when I can.

I’m glad you’re with me, Samwise Gamgee

I thought it was amusing, certainly didn’t think it any sillier or cheesier than the others.

Hear! Hear! Downright charming film. Fabulous seeing Karen Allen again. And those soft focus lenses are fantastic....

Safe to shoot yet the question is IF your lever gun will feed em properly. I use 44 specials in a Marlin 44 mag but do not own a 44 Mag flavored Winchester . Shouldn’t be an issue at all DJ !

They make a slip on recoil pad available at Midway or Brownells as well !

That 44 mag should be a sweet little plinker ?!?!?

You ever pass thru the Panhandle of Texas I’ll buy you and your family a steak dinner and let ya plink with my 500 Linebaugh Bisley and our Ruger No 1 re-chambered in 460 Weatherby Mag.....:o)

I read a great article in "More" magazine about Karen Allen. She now lives in the Berkshires. Hollywood was calling less frequently the past few years, and she and her husband had divorced, so she was a single mom of a teenager about to head off to college. She was casting around for something to do with her life, and realized she loved to knit! So she went to a college in NYC to study knitting, especially using a knitting machine, and started a business! She knits scarves and other accessories and sells them in her store in Great Barrington, MA. They had a picture of her workshop, and described it as a crayon box, there were so many bright colors of yarn in it. There was also a picture of a couple of her designs, and they were lovely!

In fact, when Steven Spielberg called her about the new movie, she thought at first that he was calling about some knitted things that his wife, Kate Capshaw, had bought from her the previous Christmas. She was thrilled he was calling her to reprise her role as Marion.

The Dodgers have a guy on their team - Chin-lung Hu. It’s all I can do to keep from asking “Hu’s on first?”

There. I asked it.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss, Corin. Losing a loved one always hurts, but it appears that she lived a good life and was ready to be with God. You are all in my prayers.
