semelparous • \seh-MEL-puh-rus\ • adjective
reproducing or breeding only once in a lifetime
Example sentence:
Each year the semelparous salmon return to the stream where they hatched to spawn, and they die soon thereafter.

The combining form "-parous" was first used in English by the 17th-century physician and writer Sir Thomas Browne, who wrote about organisms that were "multiparous" ("producing more than one at a birth"), "oviparous" ("producing eggs that develop outside the maternal body"), and "viviparous" ("producing living young instead of eggs from within the body"). The suffix is based on the Latin verb "parere," meaning "to give birth to," which is also a relative of the word that gave us "parent." "Semelparous," the youngest offspring of "-parous," was born in 1954. Its other parent is "semel," the Latin word for "once."

Too bad Rosalyn Carter was multiparous, since they had several unfortunate-looking children. Remember how Miss Lillian said she wished she hadn’t had any children?

i heard 3 women from the polygamy FLDS cult on Fox and Friends on my way in this AM, not a semelparous woman on that ranch. wish i could have seen them. they were obviously put on the show to laud the praises of the virtuous clean lives that are led there. and funny, not a SINGLE ONE of them knows anyone married at age 15.
i feel the beginnings of a bad day here. first off, after dropping xsboy at school i arrive to find my parking garage closed up tight, which meant i had to block several blocks further away for $4 more, which is $16 to park there for the day. i am guessing it is bc of the Pope’s visit. xsboy has no school tomorrow bc most of the faculty will be at the Papal Mass.

LOL, Peter was just on with his dad, and said that Matthews seemed a bit grumpy, but the people were not there for Matthews, they were there for McCain.
oh no we missed that! we saw the still shot of Peter asking the question earlier this AM. my 13 yo LOVES steve doocey, so when she got a gander at his son Peter, she was definitely in love! i can’t believe they had him on, she had already left for school!

I was watching that interview. Stepford wives was the phrase my husband used to describe how they came acroos.
I found the entire segment very disconcerting.
LOL, Matthews was grumpy. He was ready to open his mouth a couple times during the student questions but waited until after McCain was done talking.
Then he said something about smart ass questions.
To be honest I don't think MSNBC made the connection between Peter and his dad.
well i teared up when Gretchen teared up bc she has an almost 5 yo son herself, but they didn’t sound quite right to me otherwise. what is pure about multiple spouses?
i met steve doocey during a man on the street interview about a million years ago, when he was the weatherman for a local DC tv station. i have always liked him : )
MSNBC is SO clueless they would not know the names of the tv personalities from the competition, they are so far back in Fox’s dust!
