Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - stygian
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/09/2008

Posted on 04/09/2008 5:54:57 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stygian • \STIJ-ee-un\ • adjective, (often capitalized)

1. of or relating to the river Styx
2. extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding *

Example sentence:

When the power went out in the building, the halls and stairwells were plunged into stygian darkness.

Did you know?
"Stygian" comes to us (by way of Latin "stygius" and Greek "stygios") from "Styx," the name of the principal river in Hades, the underworld of the dead in Greek mythology. This is the river over which Charon the boatman was said to ferry the spirits of the dead; the Greeks and Romans would place a coin in the mouth or hand of the deceased to serve as fare. It is also the river by which the gods swore their most binding oaths, according to the epics of Homer. English speakers have been using "stygian" to mean "of or relating to the river Styx" since the early 16th century. From there the meaning broadened to describe things that are as dark, dreary, and menacing as one might imagine Hades and the river Styx to be.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

No, it is an art show in Fort Worth held in May - usually kind of a carnival type atmosphere so there were a lot of people in town for that -

The weather around your area looks like a stygian thunderstorm! Hang in there!

Sorry to all subbies I haven’t been in. You know how we were talking about spiders onc day last week? Oh, and just like bees, they never bother me.

Got bit by a brown recluse according to Cyber. After four or five days, it still bright purplish and red, about a half dollar size. Didn’t even know it happened, but when I felt the itch of the bite, I put Gentramycin and a Band-Aide on it so I wouldn’t scratch it during the night. Still the size of a half dollar, but hasn’t gotten bigger.

I think I’m on my 20th life. LOL!

As far as I know, I'd never been bitten by a spider....until 2 weeks ago.

Mine was slightly larger than a nickle and had a definite center bite with a red ring at the outer edge.

I didn't realize I had been bitten either, and when my back muscles started hurting, I slapped a hot heating pad on it....(probably fried the sucker)

I never saw the spider and when my husband started to apply some ointment to my muscles he found the bite.

The next morning I went to Urgent Care and the doctor put me on Keflex, a broad spectrum antibiotic for a week.

It's still there, but much faded now.

It's an excuse to go out and get drunk with a lot of people -- sort of like Octoberfest but with better weather.

LOL! i got an email from her this AM saying she heard a storm last night and when she got up this AM to go to the gym she saw lots of tree damage, big limbs down etc. I said don’t worry Vast has assured me that UD lies in a protected zone, in line with the airport. i said, but of course, he has this derived from some cockamamie idea that God is protecting the cowboys/Texas stadium, so i am not sure how long the protection will last...

What she did not know is how truly bad the damage was northwest of her (Coppell and Las Colinas) and to the southwest of her (Colleyville and Hurst) and even in southern Irving, and how relatively unscathed the area immediately around UD came through the storm. When I was hearing reports on the radio this morning I was laughing because I was thinking "if xs could hear all this she would recognize my 'zone of protection' in all of it."

Sheesh, Guenie!

I checked with Google today because I’m soooooo tired, but there are no brown recluse spiders in this part of North America. I got bit by an Arizona recluse spider.

When I saw the blisters that evening, I immediately put on Gentramycin and a Band-Aide. The next three days and today, I put on an antihistimine and have taken oral antihistimines. Still the same size, but has not spread, so I think I have it under control.

Sorry about your bite. Who would know? You don’t feel the bite untll the blisters show and the red/purple round nickel, quarter or half dollar shape appears. And then you see the bite wound. Uggghhhhh.

I think I’m tired from Benadryl, that drug always makes me tired.

I hate antibiotics. Last time I took them was when the kitten was playing with me and the next morning I had blisters between my fingers. The following day at my husband’s insistence I was at the doc. Had I waited a couple more days I would have had a blood infection and been in the hospital. And, yes, I was on Keflex, too. Of course, you take antibiotics because something is wrong and you feel sicker. DUH!

Glad you and I both survived. I’ll be back on WFTD in full force and effect next Monday.

Thanks for writing!
