I'm sorry to have to be the one to report this to you, Ed, but there is no market for 60's-style folk music these days. The big sellers are pop, pop/rock, country, and the so-called urban genre that encompases modern R&B, hip-hop and rap. Even straight rap is moribund and has been largely replaced by hip-hop.
There is a market for what's called adult contemporary, but that's really a mish-mash of Michael Buble type stuff, and anything in the pop, pop/rock and urban genres that appeals to an older demographic. Brooke might have a shot in the AC genre if she doesn't want to go country, but, as I said in an earlier posts, I have my doubts.
In fact, like all other forms of traditional media (radio, newspapers, broadcast TV), the record industry is struggling to find a way to remain relevant in the 21st Century. In the country genre, there is room for Brooke to do more folk-oriented music.
AI thread friend, I am praying for you.
Yeah, you’re prolly right.
I remember, though...when the film “Oh, Brother...” came out, all of a sudden roots and mountain music was everywhere.
Allison Krauss, Earl Scruggs, all those great bluegrass folks, were everywhere, in stores, on the radio, winning Grammys, wouldn’t it be possible that something like Circle Game or Both Sides Now could become popular again?
Of course, my favorite decade was 1965-1975, CSN&Y, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, The Dead, Kinks, Cream, Beatles, The Who, etc., which we don’t really hear anymore.
Thanks for the post, it was interesting, and raised some good points.
By the way, Kristi Lee is going to have a autograph signing party at the local supermarket tomorrow.
I’m not going but it seems to be attracting a lot of interest in the area.
Ed
a second amen
Brooke was very awkward trying to dance or even move around while singing. Perhaps when she tried to do it to satisfy the critics desire for trying something new, she got too nervous. She was at her best singing while playing the piano or sitting.
Syesha is the only one left who has improved over her earlier performances, IMHO. The others seem exactly like they were at their auditions.
Last year many of the finalists improved in singing and appearance as the weeks went by. They had more room for improvement than this year's group, but I enjoyed watching their development.
I wanna be Marilyn! I will also accept the role of Mia Farrow, though I am NOT messin’ with Woody Allen later.
Will pray hard for success for the Idol Thread friend. You guys have so made me laugh each day after the Idol shows (’cause I watch it in PST). G-d bless you all.
Wolf like you I have my doubts too, but this country thing has just got me confounded. I think you're confusing what sounds like a country-twang with that subtle break in her voice. I think I know where you're coming from there, but I don't for one second think she has the packaging for a country artist.
Brooke should be able to pull this off in the AC genre. To me, she could be another Sheryl Crow or Sarah Bareilles if she can slay her emotional overwrought demons.
Of course I agree, it would be interesting if she couldn't pull it off in AC, she would then try country.
Have you heard her song "Free?"
Right. Besides, Elaine on Seinfeld, she was the goofiest looking woman dancing I've ever seen! However, what really makes up for her lack of dancing skill is she can strike a certain pose and just end up looking gorgeous!
Speaking of Mariah ~
Yesterday I heard something funny.
My hubby used to work with a lady who’s young son was obsessed with breaking into Hollywood and becoming a comedian.
For years she did everything in her power to help him and I guess it paid off.
He just married Mariah Carey!
My two biggest contentions for Brooke are, You're so Vain and Love Is A Battlefield. Acoustically she could make those songs hits on her own today, there is no doubt. However, I wonder if she had to do them again if she was still on AI, would they be as good today as back when she originally performed them?
MD, I don't think she would. She needs time to discover who she really is as a performer in her own skin. I hope she succeeds.
Here’s the Medford Mail Tribune’s article on Kristi Lee in Selma yesterday:

Here’s to hoping that Jason will get the boot this week and Syesha the week after. (Or vice versa.) Dreadlocks boy doesn’t really want to be there anyway. Although she’s certainly stepped it up the past few weeks, Syesha has had so many pitch problems during this season that have made me want to tear my hair out that I’m almost bald. Hopefully my few remaining hairs will be spared by her imminent departure.
I’m hoping for a David v. David finale with a Cook victory. I think David Archuleta has an amazing voice, but he needs to live a little bit more to be able to bring something really special to his songs. Cook is already there. Just my .02
Thank you so much for your prayers. I’ll pass them on to our friend.
I’m with you 100%. Tiny Tim Castro is long over-due to go home. I DID like Syesha last week but she was not as good as Kristy Lee Cook or Brooke. (I think the tight dress helped her out this week.)
All in all, this is one of the worst season for talent but I believe David Cook has really come up on his own and shown himself to be a success. At first I called him Daughtery “lite” but he’s really as good and even a bit better.
My 2 cents plus yours is a penny short of a nickle. :)
Sorry I missed this special prayer request before.
I will add this intention to my prayer list.
Dear AI FRiend, whoever you are, things will get better for you with all the prayers being sent up.
