He’s gone from living in his car to having a record deal in the span of a year. Now, Morristown, Tenn., teenager Josiah Leming - forever known as the kid living out of his car on “American Idol” season seven - has signed with Warner Bros. Records.
He’s also gotten an agent and an entertainment lawyer. According to one source, he bought his dad a new truck recently to celebrate this upward turn of events.
Earlier this season, Leming made it to the early rounds of “Idol” in Hollywood, but failed to make the top 24 cut. He’s currently in London recording his debut CD.
Leming told the Tele-buddy column in April that his debut CD is poised for release this fall.
Leming, 19, is working with producer/musician David Kosten, whose other credits include Bat For Lashes and Faultline.
“Idol” certainly gave Leming a boost. Since his appearance in January, his MySpace page has racked up nearly 3 million views while Leming’s songs have been listened to more than 2 million times.
News of Leming’s Warner Bros. signing was first announced in March on knoxnews.com. However, Leming had to negotiate with “American Idol” producers before the deal could be made official.
During an interview earlier this year, Leming pinpointed his career path carefully. “I need to play my cards right,” he said. “I have no idea what I am doing.
“I understand I have a small window of opportunity to deal with.”
Leming dropped out of high school but later got his GED after a friend paid him $150 to do so.
Last year he was living out of his car while traveling around the South and Midwest playing stray gigs. When he auditioned for “Idol” last fall, he was living out of his car in Atlanta.
In May, “Idol” judge Simon Cowell says he was still disappointed Leming did not go farther in the competition. And now that Leming is working on a debut CD?
“I think I was proven right,” Cowell said.
