Home gardening offers ways to trim grocery costs [Survival Today, an on going thread]

Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick

Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.

At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."

Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.

A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

[snipped]

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.

"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

Organic Alternatives to Chemicals

Control many pesky garden insects with this homemade spray: combine onion skins, four cloves of garlic and two cups of water in a blender. Thoroughly blend. Allow mixture to sit overnight, then strain. Add mixture to sprayer with a half-gallon of water. Control insect pests by spraying upper and underside of leaves.

Another chemical spray alternative to ward off insects, as well as animals, is a combination of the following: one tablespoon cayenne pepper flakes, three garlic cloves, one teaspoon liquid detergent, three teaspoons vegetable oil and two cups water. Blend by shaking well or place in a blender. Pour into sprayer, and apply to upper and underside of leaves.

Re-apply either spray after a rain shower.

I use a good quality oil and rub it in with a paper towel all over the inside of the pan, even up the sides. Then I put it on low heat on the stove for about an hour until the oil darkens. I only wash with water, soap, and a scrubbie maybe three or four times a year, tops; otherwise, when I’m done cooking, I just wipe mine out with a paper towel and rub with more oil in between uses.

(I have two sizes of cast iron skillets, and use both of them at least 3 times a week, as I cook a LOT)

If you’re frying something like meat or veggies that might “stick” to the pan, just splash in some wine to loosen the food, (de-glaze the pan) and it makes for a terrific tasting sauce!

MORTGAGE FRAUD
New Analysis of a Rising Threat
05/13/08

Photo of a home with a sign in the front reading; Foreclosure, Home For Sale.
By the end of fiscal year 2007, we were handling just over 1,200 mortgage fraud investigations.

We’ve just released a comprehensive new report on mortgage fraud—now posted in full on this website. And, as you might expect given the downturn in the economy and all the troubles in the lending industry, it isn’t a pretty picture.

The information can get quite technical, with plenty of charts, graphs, and hard numbers. But we invite you to take a read if you’re interested in getting educated on the issue—and on emerging schemes that might impact your own pocketbook.

Among the key findings:

... Mortgage fraud is clearly on the rise. Although there is no central way to track the total extent of the problem, we received 46,717 Suspicious Activity Reports related to mortgage fraud last year—compared to 35,617 in 2006 and just 6,936 in 2003. Only seven percent of these reports documented an exact dollar amount in terms of losses, but even so, the total loss from this seven percent was $813 million. Our caseload has also escalated. By the end of fiscal year 2007, we were handling just over 1,200 mortgage fraud investigations—a 47 percent increase from 2006 and a whopping 176 percent increase from 2003.

... The downward trend in the housing market will continue (see forecasts provided by the Mortgage Bankers Association in the report), providing further incentive for shady real estate industry insiders to look for dishonest ways to turn a profit and growing opportunities for scam artists to prey on vulnerable homeowners.

... The subprime lending crisis is a contributing factor to mortgage fraud, both directly and indirectly. Subprime loans, designed for people with poor or limited credit histories, now represent more than 13 percent of all outstanding loans—double the percentage of five years ago. These high-interest, high-risk loans contributed to the 2.2 million foreclosures filed during 2007, up 75 percent from 2006. The trouble actually began when home prices were rising a few years ago, leading to relaxed lending practices throughout the industry and the exaggeration of assets by borrowers anxious to qualify for loans, both of which contributed to fraud.

... The top 10 hotspots nationwide for mortgage fraud in 2007, carefully mapped from multiple public and private sources, were: Florida, Georgia, Michigan, California, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, New York, Colorado, and Minnesota. The north-central region had the largest share of mortgage fraud, followed by the west and southeast regions.

.. The latest mortgage scams run the gamut: from “builder-bailout” schemes where developers unload excess inventory through financial trickery…to foreclosure rescue frauds that trick homeowners into signing over the deed to their house; from seller-assistance scams that use false appraisals to sell homes…to identity theft that leads to home equity credit lines being opened and drained. See the report for more details.

The report also briefly recounts our proactive response to the problem, including our participation in the Department of Justice’s Mortgage Fraud Working Group, through which we are helping to identify large-scale industry insiders and criminal enterprises conducting systemic mortgage fraud...our work in multi-agency mortgage fraud task forces and working groups around the country...and our recent “Mortgage Fraud Summit” to discuss the issue with special agents nationwide.

HODGE PODGE DAY: Recipes and Kitchen Tips

Today I have a few recipes and tips I’ve run across
in the past couple of weeks that I thought you’d enjoy.

Skinny Crab Dip

2 oz fat-free or 1/3 less fat cream cheese
2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise or salad dressing
2 tablespoons finely chopped chives or green onions
2 teaspoons lemon juice or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dillweed
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 cans (8 oz each) crabmeat, well drained

In medium bowl, combine cream cheese and mayonnaise.
Stir until very smooth. Add chives or green onions, lemon
juice or vinegar, dill, salt, and pepper. Stir to mix thoroughly.
Stir in crab. Cover and refrigerate several hours before
serving.

Greens and Rice
Massachusetts Dept. of Agriculture

Ingredients:
1 pound spinach, steamed and cut into 1/2 inch strips
2 cups cooked rice, brown or white
2/3 cup grated cheddar cheese
2 eggs beaten
2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup soft, whole grain bread crumbs

Wash greens and steam until tender. Combine the
cooked rice, cheese, and eggs. Add parsley and
pepper. In an oiled 8”x8” casserole dish, alternate
layers of rice and greens, ending with rice. Top
casserole with crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees F for
30 minutes. Serves 6.

Tips from Chicken of the Sea Newsletter

How can you test the freshness of baking powder?
Simply add two tablespoons of baking soda to a
cup of hot water. If the water foams, the baking
powder is still useable!

You can tell if a stick of butter is soft enough to bake
with by bending it in half. If the stick does not crack
or break, it is ready for your favorite cookie or cake
recipe!

Subject: [CollectiveWisdom] HOT CHOCOLATE

HOT CHOCOLATE

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking
at a
reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now
retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints
about
stress in their work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the
professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot
chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some
plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help
themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said:

‘Notice that all the nice looking expensive cups were taken, leaving
behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want
only
the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and
stress.

The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the
hot
chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases
even
hides what we drink.

What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate,
not
the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you
began
eyeing each other’s cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and
position
in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life.

The
cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot
chocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses

the cups.

The happiest people don’t have the best of everything.

They just make the best of everything that they have.

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
And enjoy your hot chocolate.

USA: FDA obtains permanent injunction against Scientific Laboratories, Inc. [May 19 Rockville MD]—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that Scientific Laboratories Inc., and its president, Rajeshwari Patel, and chief executive officer, Amit Roy, have signed a Consent Decree of Permanent Injunction and are barred from manufacturing and distributing drug products until they bring their manufacturing operations into compliance with law and obtain approval for their products.

Scientific Laboratories is a contract manufacturer and distributor of various prescription cough and cold products. The government’s complaint, filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, alleged violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The company failed to seek required FDA approval for some of its products and failed to comply with current good manufacturing practice requirements (CGMP).

“The FDA will not allow a company to put the public’s health at risk,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “These unapproved new drugs have not undergone FDA review for safety and efficacy and may pose potential health risks.”

The unapproved new drugs manufactured and marketed by Scientific Laboratories as prescription cough and cold products include: B-Vex Suspension, Ben-Tann Suspension, D-Tann Suspension, D-Tann AT Suspension, D-Tann CT Suspension, D-Tann DM Suspension, D-Tann HC Suspension, Dur-Tann DM Suspension, Duratan DM Suspension, L-All 12 Suspension, Nazarin Liquid, and Nazarin HC Liquid. Because these drugs have not undergone FDA review nor received approval, their safety and effectiveness have not been established. Additionally, the FDA has not reviewed the adequacy and accuracy of the directions and warnings in their labeling.

The FDA had warned Scientific Laboratories against violating the FD&C Act and about the risk of enforcement action if it failed to take corrective measures.

“The FDA will take action against companies and their executives who violate the law and endanger public health,” said Margaret O’K. Glavin, associate commissioner for Regulatory Affairs. “The FDA will carefully monitor the provisions of this injunction as well as investigate and take action against other marketers of unapproved drugs.”

The consent decree bars the defendants from manufacturing and distributing any drug until they obtain required FDA approval and fully comply with CGMP requirements. The defendants must destroy their illegal drugs. The consent decree also allows the FDA to order the defendants to shut down in the event of future violations. It also subjects the defendants to liquidated damages in the amount of $5,000 per day if they fail to comply with any of the provisions of the decree, and an additional sum of $5,000 for each violation, up to $1 million per year.

If patients have these products in their homes, they should discuss with their health care provider whether to discontinue use of the products and to find alternative therapy. Pharmacies should discontinue dispensing these products.

In June 2006, the FDA issued a guidance document titled, “Marketed Unapproved Drugs—Compliance Policy Guide” (CPG). This CPG makes clear that companies may not market drugs that require approval without first establishing, through applications for approval, that the products are safe and effective. The CPG also explains that FDA may take action against manufacturers and marketers of unapproved drugs that violate other provisions of the FD&C Act, including CGMP requirements.

The decree was signed Thurs., May 8, 2008 by Judge William D. Quarles, Jr., in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
