Except for "2001", pretty much all science fiction is more fiction than science, especially Star Wars, which is pure "space fantasy".

I must agree. Kubrick’s 2001 leaves everyone else in the dust cinematically and symbolically.

Yep. Star Wars is space fantasy. Though technically you could conceivably apply that term to
all science fiction.
As for 2001: A Space Odyssey, would guess that a black stone magically appearing counts as fantasy, along with the singularity-thing going on during the end (not to mention that that stupid psychedelic light show that went on and on and on and on got old after the first ten seconds).
