Where have all the sci-fi films gone?
Those simple, thought-provoking speculative tales about how people respond to something new, what kind of moral choices they make, keeping traditions in the face of technological change. Essentially, the kind of films that were thought provoking and story/character driven - Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of Apes, 12 Monkeys, Minority Report (more action though but good), etc.
The "Superhero and Fantasy Genre Craze" since Spiderman and LOTR has really eaten up a lot of support for original sci-fi works to film...
For 2008, we have two horror/slasher types "I Am Legend" (Omega Man remake) and "Death Race" (revisiting the 70's version), another superhero film in "Jumper", "Iron Man", which could be a treat, and maybe the only true sci-fi attempt, "Babylon A.D.". There was also "Sunshine", a late 90's disaster film leftover, possibly funded by Global Warming-mongers ;)
“Tin Man” got hosed by the critics, but I enjoyed it enough that I may poop for the DVD next month.

Great choice! I would also like to see Burroughs' John Carter on Mars series, but the biggest money maker would be "Space Willies" and Bruce Willis would make the perfect hero.

Did you ever notice in the old films from the 50s-60s, that at the first sign of trouble, one or more of the characters will pull a gun from his pocket or glove box? This says to me that it wasn’t unusual for men to walk around like that in those days.
I’d really like to see someone make a good budget version of “Brave New World.”
I’d also like to see a good budget version of Asimov’s first 3 Foundation books (or maybe split into 3 movies).
Sci-fi suffers from a lack of writers of the caliber of Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and a score of others.
Never saw the show.. the movie was rather entertaining though.

I loved Babylon 5 until the Vorgon solution. I sat there for 10 minutes with an empty feeling in my stomach. I could never sit through another episode. I spent years watching the series, getting pulled in deeper and deeper then....... I was so disappointed.

In that order IMO. Firefly would be on that list if they had more episodes.

That one gave me nightmares when I was young. Another one that scared me to death as a child was Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. I first saw the previews at the drive in, and it scared me so bad my parents refused to take me to see the movie!

I never saw Firefly when it was on Fox as a series, but my son dragged me to see the movie Serenity. It was the most unusual yet entertaining show I have seen in many years. The characters were outstanding. The story was inventive. The dialog was hilarious. A space western, who could have imagined it would be so good. Too bad Fox had to pull the trigger so quickly.
If you ever wanted to see a "time-travel" story done right, this is it.
It was made on a 7,000 dollar budget.
