Where have all the sci-fi films gone?
Those simple, thought-provoking speculative tales about how people respond to something new, what kind of moral choices they make, keeping traditions in the face of technological change. Essentially, the kind of films that were thought provoking and story/character driven - Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of Apes, 12 Monkeys, Minority Report (more action though but good), etc.
The "Superhero and Fantasy Genre Craze" since Spiderman and LOTR has really eaten up a lot of support for original sci-fi works to film...
For 2008, we have two horror/slasher types "I Am Legend" (Omega Man remake) and "Death Race" (revisiting the 70's version), another superhero film in "Jumper", "Iron Man", which could be a treat, and maybe the only true sci-fi attempt, "Babylon A.D.". There was also "Sunshine", a late 90's disaster film leftover, possibly funded by Global Warming-mongers ;)
All the good sci-fi writing is on television these days. Lost, Heroes, Jericho, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Sci-Fi and FX channels make their own movies and series, some are pretty good.
Movies are junk, but I liked Cloverfield and Transformers.
Those shows are playing nightly in the skies above Stephensville, Texas. Live performances for those willing to watch...
I was deeply saddened when this was canceled, it really could have had legs if given a chance.
I'm not really looking forward to any movies, but I am getting a kick out of the Terminator-Sarah Connor Chronicles show. Last night was an interesting twist - John is actually turning out to be resourcefull and daring - completely unlike T-3. Much better character than T-2, even. Not hard to beat Furlong, though.
They are still around. Why don’t you try An Inconvenient Truth? I heard that is great science fiction!
Yeah, good luck seeing that plot come out of Hollywood. ;)
Even "Sunshine" turned out to be more of a horror movie, with a supernatural twist that ruined it as a legitimate SciFi work. There hasn't been anything good since "Serenity", and it's past time for Hollywood to get Joss Whedon back to work.
my brother was a big fireball XL5 fan. I preferred Stingray or Supercar meself;-)
gerry anderson fans know what we’re on about...
“I liked Tim Man although its mini-series presentation probably knocks it out of your category. I do think the wealth of channels available means the innovative stuff gets targeted there, Sarah Connor Chronicles being an example.”
Battlestar Galactica (the new one) is a good show. Tin Man was pretty good, as well. I was surprised by that one.
Well then, let's elect him President!
D@mn! Here I was all excited about the election and I looked at the ballot again and we've got McCAIN!. Boy, am I embarrassed.

Forbidden Planet My favorite, boy did I have nightmares after seeing it as a kid. I have the music and play it from time to time Way Far Out!!!
Whose “THEM”? Michigan? Heh heh.
You forgot Cloverfield.
There’s also a lot of sci-fi on TV: Heroes, Lost, Battlestar-Galactica.
We need a good remake of that Rowdy Roddy Piper classic...”They Live” Especially that overly drawn out fight scene where he gets the guy to look through the glasses.
I’m thinking Will Smith and Martin Lawrence could duplicate this as lead roles. Pick whatever glamour babe you want as the girl who takes him back to her house, and then a bunch of liberals could play the “THEY” roles. Saves on makeup in the case of Nancy Pelosi....
Hey, even though Tom Cruise was in it, I thought War of the Worlds was pretty good. Pretty faithful to the original concept, too (just modernized).
Now there’s a classic. I love Logan’s Run.
Death race was good too, I still say to myself, 25 points when some one tries to step out in front of the car.

Thank George Lucas and Lucas Films for the ushering in of CGI and ruining movies. His first 3 (or last 3 in the saga) Star Wars were great. Then he went CGI and the plot lines and good writing meant nothing, and why should they when you can have super cool computer effects!
Saw it in the theatre when I was 16, so I obviously remember certain "parts" better than others.
Not to mention, (IMO) THE best sci-fi series...or ANY series, for that matter:
Babylon 5.
