I am going to be so confused when they get to Hollywood—all these blondes! Hard to tell one from another.

Once again, while too late for Season 7 auditioners, the list of things to do/remember prior to your audition, if you actually beleive you're talented and aren't just trying to get on TV:
- SONG SELECTION. Don't pick your favorite song or artist just because you like them. Pick a song that will showcase your voice, even if you really don't like that particular song so much to listen to. Corollary: Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Stevie Wonder songs are essentially off-limits; use only at your own extreme risk.
- Practice makes perfect. Memorize the song. Practice with and without accompaniment until you've really "got it", and then a capella only from then on.
- Dry runs. Get your hands on a video camera of some sort and go through your entire performance. Play it back and learn from your mistakes. To simulate nervousness, chug a caffeinated drink and jog for five minutes before starting.
- If you've never sung in public before, find ways to do so -- even just singing at a karaoke bar if you have to. "Being nervous" is the worst excuse you can have; if you can't deliver in front of a handful of people and a few cameras, how are you going to manage a theater with a live audience?
- SONG SELECTION. Yeah, I said it before. It's that important.
- Volume is not a substitute for talent.
- "Range" is not a substitute for talent.
- A non-singing talent is not a substitute for singing talent.
- Ignore the fact that Simon says he wants "something unique". He doesn't. He's looking for something "fresh" within a fairly narrow set of guidelines.
- Dress for success. If you've got the bod, dress to show it off in a good light; refrain from sluttiness, however. If you don't, dress conservatively but with a sense of basic style. (As painful as it is to do so, I recommend one of Mrs. kevkrom's shows, "What Not To Wear", for basic wardrobe advice.)
- The only legitimate answer to the question "why are you auditioning today" is some variation of "because I am the next American Idol". If you can't say it and believe it, stay home.
- If you have a criminal record, disclose it.
- If you are not a US citizen, make sure you have a work permit before auditioning.
- The judges owe you nothing except an honest appraisal. Be gracious regardless of their decisions. Thank them for their time. Feel free to abuse Seacrest, however. He'd probably enjoy it and it makes for good TV.
Now that you've made it to Hollywood, add the following to the list:
- SONG SELECTION. This is still as important as ever. It isn't changing, get used to it. You are trying to "sell" yourself, pick the right ad.
- Get a couple of Motown's greatest hits CDs and listen to them until you have learned at least 10 songs by heart. Odds are at least one of them will be on the list for the "group performance" round. Come up with some basic choreography for each so that your group can hit the ground running. This ties into...
- Sleep. As tempting as it will be to have a good time, or stay up all night practicing the group song, go to bed at a decent hour while you're actually there. I don't care how young and energetic you are, a lack of sleep will make you sluggish and irritable.
- The cameras are rolling. Find an aspect of your personality to emphasize so that you're memorable, but don't push it too hard so it looks like an act. Being a jerk to other contestants or the judges won't help either.

I thought AI had eliminated the group performance this season or was that just a rumor?
To: FreedomForce
If they did, I’d be sorry to see it go. What the contests usually fail to realize is that it is a test of professionalism, not talent, and it’s very good at weeding out those who can’t handle the pressure.

Get your hands on a video camera of some sort and go through your entire performance That should be a given, but it's obvious that some have never seen (or heard) video of themselves. Or even looked in a mirror.

all these blondes! Hard to tell one from another.Same here. The only two that stand out to me are Kristy Lee Cook, because she looks and sounds like she just walked out of a Country CD (which she kinda did) and Jessica Brown, the recovering meth addict.
