The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Will pray for SirKit, but my math prayers don’t get much beyond “where 2 or 3 are gathered...”
My last math class was when Richard Nixon was in the White House.
And his poll numbers were still good.

Excellent! How much math would it take to understand his stuff? I mean, if you post a link to his abstract eventually, would it make my brain hurt?

He just showed me the Lemma and the Proof. It's incomprehensible to me. He's going to bounce it off David, who's so good at Math it even scares SirKit! I guess, depending on how much Math you've had, you may be able to understand it.
Even though I have no idea what he's doing, I always tell him, "they also serve, who only stand and wait", and pray. ;o)

Well based on my homework tonight that isn’t even math but is using mathematical notation (seriously, why must they use = different notations for every method? I can’t keep track of what means “not” in this notation) I’d probably get lost in SirKit’s work.

I’m good at ciphering, but have never been interested in abstract math.

We think they got the idea for "New Amsterdam" from a book by Peter Hamill called Forever; pretty much the same premise, boy receives gift of eternal life until he finds his one true love. It starts in Ireland in the 1700's and then proceeds to New York City. Fanastic history lesson on the politics, corruption, and growth that is New York. It starts falling apart a little when he writes about current day events, but it is still a wonderful book. I don't picture the main character of the book as the actor playing the role in the TV series; that was a bit disappointing.
To: LSAggie
Thanks,I’ll have to check that book out! We’re enjoying the series.

I just put the book, “Forever” on my ‘request’ list at the library. It’s written by the NYC journalist, Pete Hamill. I checked Amazon.com, and it turns out he’s written several novels. You’re right, the story is nothing like the story on the TV show, but I can understand if they got the idea from it.

Maybe I just missed it, but did we ever hear any explanation for why Goodwin had a chemical burn, and why he didn't want anyone to know?
To: SuziQ
Will do! Breakthroughs in math are extra special. Anyone can synthesize a molecule but it takes someone special to discern a “new” law of the universe.
To: Corin Stormhands
No - I didn't catch that but it would certainly fit with that time travel theory.
To: RosieCotton
I think you're right! We never did find out what was so hush hush about the burn .
To: SuziQ
Yup, Hamill's a flaming liberal, but a darn good writer. His latest book North River, set in the Great Depression, is also excellent. My parents were children during the Depression and didn't talk much about it, and even though I'd been taught about it, North River really brought the reality of the Depression home.

Please Ma...can I stay home today???

LOL!! What did you ping me for? I’m not old enough to be your mother!! Old enough to be a mother to a lot of these Hobbit Holers, but not you!
I have to get our tax stuff to the accountant today. Can’t put it off any longer. (sigh)
To: Corin Stormhands
Ugh, I so want a weekend right now.
