Thanks *HUGGGSS*
It seemed to happen so fast. We knew he wasn’t well, but we thought we were managing his discomforts.
It never occurred to me yesterday at this time, that.....oh, my.
Sorry.
What a downer on new years eve.

Oh, honey! ( Im an old Southern man, thats how Id address you face to face )LOL. And I'd love it. :-)
I am so terribly sorry. Axel was beautiful, and I know how damn hard it is to to face this.
Thanks Backhoe. We had to put Lilly down last October, and I remember the thread you posted for your best friend, around the same time, I think. BTW, how is the centrifugal puppy?
Wife Miss Emily sends you her kindest wishes, too.
Thanks Miss Emily.

Yes, it was a year ago in February several strokes felled Taffy ( 14 years ) and we brought the vet out to put her to sleep.
And after about three days, the silence was so profound ( how does one medium-sized dog have so much life? ) we went to Animal Control and got what they claimed was "a six-month old Collie..."
Vet looked at his teeth, said "four months!" and now he's 60 pounds of Golden Retriever, and eating like a horse, and still growing.
Miss Emily keeps threatening to start a blog, "The Truth About Golden Retrievers..."
Yes, they are fine dogs, but "quiet, sedate, and good around old people and children, because they are so gentle" doesn't seem to apply to this one.
Midway down the page,
-Here--
starts the tale of Cole, The Canine Circular Saw.

Fifteen years is such a long time to have such a friend. I meant to add that he came to us when he was going on 5.
He was pretty mean then, and didn’t trust a soul.
With love and trust, we got him to accept his position in the pecking order ~ One down from any human except a threat.
;-)

LOLOL! I remember that!
---------------------------------
As Miss Emily noted:
Backhoe and I are the proud parents of a baby boy named Cole. He is a part collie puppy and so far has:
rearranged most of our throw rugs
stolen a pair of Backhoe’s shoes
discovered that heaters are hot
had diarrhea twice
thrown up once
scared the daylights out of our cockatiel
tried to eat my heating pad
stolen my foot massager
and hes only been here an hour and a half.
The house is no longer too quiet.
Puppies do sleep, dont they?????
And he steals shoes, and the mechanic’s rag I habitually keep in my hip pocket...
( And we learned from the mobile Vet, who came out to check him two days ago, that is is not the six months of age the shelter claimed...
...he’s four months old. Chew, chew, bark, gnaw, run and fall, run and fall... )

We still have Rush. He is out of sorts tonight. He was here when Axel passed, and kept smelling him, before the doctor took him away.
Ahhh, we'll be OK.
Thanks for the nice memories. *HUG*

The Door
Before you enter Heaven, you pass this door a lot.
Although it tells you, Enter, you know youd rather not.
It is a one-way doorway, that leads to far beyond,
And later always seems to be the way we all respond.
Oh, one day it will call again, as sirens often wail,
And it may seem appropriate to step beyond the pale.
For all ways turn you back to this. This turning in the hall,
Where footsteps echo distantly, and somehow have a call.
We wonder where they lead to, what we may find in there,
And sometimes we may pause and ponder, stop and then just stare.
We do not hear the voices, the music, or the beat,
As if it were a distant party down the street.
Weve heard that there are wonders, and glories to behold,
And that the first thing we will lose is having grown too old.
Wise caution seems to hold us back, for we have come to learn,
Its invitation only, and you have to wait your turn.

Well, he's a handsome devil! Animals seem to understand when their friends won't be coming back to them- I've seen it with a number of our old dogs and cats- one passes away, the the other grieves.
That last year when Taffy was failing, she'd lead me out into a sunlit place in the yard, and lie down, and seem to feel better for a while, and although it hurt me, I used to tell her, "I'd rather spend a day like this with you, than be King of the World for a thousand years..."
They ask so little, and give so much in return.

I have to ask this, as a dog lover myself: Did either one of you (or both) happen to pick up Mark Levin’s new book?

In addendum (for tomorrow):
My previous post dealt with Levin's "Rescuing Sprite." I think it was more geared towards you. If you've already read the book, you may disregard the following.
I lost a much-beloved four-legged friend within weeks of Mark losing Sprite. Thanksgiving, go figure. Levin's book helped me to put things in perspective, if even several months later.
It's never an easy process, and my heartfelt condolences go out to you.

Oh no. We absconded with Hitlery’s moving van. Did have to unload a bunch of silverware & things first, though.
