Raiders to name McCown starter for opener
NFL.com
Despite being evasive on the subject publicly, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin is expected to announce Josh McCown his starting quarterback for Oakland's season opener against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports.
Asked by reporters Wednesday when he would know who his starter would be, Kiffin replied: "I do know I wouldnt anticipate an announcement."
"They (the quarterbacks) know," Kiffin continued, but "nothings permanent."
Culpepper was sharp in the Raiders' final exhibition game on Thursday at Seattle, completing 11-of-19 passes for 108 yards and leading the offense to its only touchdown in a 19-14 loss. But Culpepper also threw an interception.
McCown started the game and went 5-for-12 for 75 yards in four series.
Culpepper is not as familiar with the offense as McCown after signing with the team on July 31 when it became apparent that top draft pick JaMarcus Russell would not be in camp anytime soon because of a contract dispute that has lasted an NFL-record number of days.
Russell remains unsigned and the Raiders could enter the season without their quarterback of the future on the roster.
Culpepper has shown that his surgically repaired right knee is healthy this preseason. He's thrown four touchdown passes with only one interception as he tries to put last year's disappointing season in Miami behind him.
After throwing 39 touchdown passes in 2004 in Minnesota, Culpepper battled injuries the past two years and had just eight touchdown passes and 18 turnovers. That led to his release by Miami in July and his late signing with the Raiders.

Maybe the Raiders should play Appalachian State first.
I think Appalachian State would have to pay the Raiders to come play them.
They did. he is holding out. Its in the article. He has broken the NFL hold-out record, winning himself fifty cents.
I guess you missed the /S at the end of my post.
I did. I was holding out. I did not win 50 cents
I wouldn't take the Raiders with anything less than 14 points.
Word is that Al Davis looked at Russell in minicamp and declared that he wasn’t ready to play at all this year, and thus has no real incentive to rush a deal.
Russell may just wind up back in the ‘08 draft.
No surprise.
The Raiders have been working long and hard, and with this, I think they finally have the last piece in place. A lot can happen in 16 weeks, but I think they have what it takes to pull it off.
0-16
Okay, I can’t be the only one who saw the title as “Raiders name McCain starter for opener” can I?
I guess they want another 2-14 season.
For those wondering, The NFL Network predicted McCown, ESPN (originally) said Culpepper.
Later on ESPN revised and said the Raiders were leaning McCown.
ESPN also reported a few months ago that Vick wasn’t going to be indicted. Ooops.
Woo Hoo, looks like Detroit should at least start the season 1-0.
That’d leave them only nine wins short of Kitna’s predicted total.
I remember that, that wasn't a mistake, that was an outright lie by Len Pasqareli (not sure how to spell his name).
Out of everyone at ESPN, he has the least credibility, and is often pushing agendas for agents (i.e. Joel Siegal).
