Pony mauled by pit bulls in Pierce County

TACOMA, Wash. -- Margaret Wingerter is amazed her Shetland pony is still alive after having its face chewed off by pit bulls.

The veterinarian needed to use nearly 300 stitches to repair the injuries.

"His face was just hanging off," Margaret said. "Both sides were literally just hanging open, gaping open."

Over the weekend, two dogs attacked the pony in the middle of the night. Neighbors rushed in with pool cues and beat the dogs away, but not before the damage was done.

Margaret was keenly aware of what happened to Sue Gorman, a Gig Resident, last week when two pit bulls entered her home and severely mauled her.

"You read about someone else like the lady that got attacked and it was like horrific, and you just it makes you sick," she said.

The dogs that attacked Gorman were captured and will likely be destroyed, but the two that attacked Margaret's pony disappeared into the neighborhood along the Puyallup River Road.

"The dogs were soaked with blood dripping off of them from the attack," said Jack Wingerter. "So those dogs went home to some parents or some family and they know something happened. But whether they come forward or not, we don't know."

The couple has grandchildren that are always around and say they now fear for their safety.

The Wingerters say the owners may believe these dogs to be harmless, but now that the pit bulls have attacked they need to be considered extremely dangerous.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigation.

Yep. Try selling this nonsense to somebody that doesn’t own dogs, for starters.

“However, an improperly maintained and improperly operated SUV will eventually “escape” control of its owner, either through loss of brakes, steering, rolling when improperly parked, etc. And when an SUV gets outside the control of its owner, it’s likely to cause a lot more damage than a smaller sedan or coupe sized vehicle...clearly by the logic of breed specific legislation, SUVs should also be banned.”

Are you actually serious about this, or is this satire?

The gun analogy wasn’t mine, it was Badeye’s, and poor though it was, he wanted it analyzed, and I did.

Read the thread, then reply, or my apologies for your attempt at satire. SUV’s, like guns, are machines.

Comparing dogs to machines is stupid. Machines can’t decide to attack you. They can’t start themselves, put them selves in drive, take their brakes off, and then come after you as you mind your own business.

Pit bulls can work, by themselves, against the constraints, of their own volition.

I’m just happy you two vote Republican. Both of you have issues constructing a logical argument.

Holy cats, you can move out of the way of the ‘runaway SUV’. You are not likely to outrun or outlast a pitbull. Some idget judge just banned metal bats in New York, so I guess its possible some idiot might try to ban SUV’s because ‘they’re big.’

You two genius’ own pit bulls, don’t you? I hope you two don’t end up having to explain all of this tortured logic to someone who’s just lost their 6 year old daughter.

“I have no idea how our cute puppy who we loved like a baby got out and evicerated your little Suzy. I’m so sorry. I don’t want you to misunderstand, he was just trying to play with her, and got carried away . . .”

I can only hope you live on compounds somewhere in the sticks where that won’t happen.

Do me a favor. Go out and assassinate your pets for me, will ya’? You’ll thank yourself down the road.

"Do me a favor. Go out and assassinate your pets for me, will ya’? You’ll thank yourself down the road."

Ah...yes...the clear rational thinker on this thread has made him/herself known. If you read the entirety of my post and actually made the effort to comprehend what I stated you'll note that I cearly qualified my remarks with the statement, "You might argue that an SUV will not, of its own volition, break out of its garage and attack people...and so it won't." I never alleged an SUV would break free and go on a rampage, and made it evidently clear that was not the purpose of my comparison. The intent was some people own property which is potentially more dangerous than the property of other people, but the POTENTIAL is largely, if not exclusively, in the control of the owner.

A pit bull, improperly kept, will do more damage than a dachshund. An AR15, if improperly handled will do more damage than a .22LR single shot, and an SUV rolling downhill because of an improperly set parking brake, will do more damage than a Yugo.

Whether or not the property has a mind or instinct of its own, it is the property owner's responsibility to take all due care...and not the property's responsibility or fault.

Your personal insults are everything I'd expect from one who responds to these issues emotionally, and so I don't take them to heart, but in the interests of making sure your slanders are at least informed, I've never owned, and most likely never will own a pit...I've always been a German Shepherd devotee, one of which passed away last month, having saved far more lives than it ever took. The dog banners are like all other control freaks and will never get enough...once pits are banned, they'll surely go after the next, "most dangerous dog," be they Rottweilers, Pinschers, Sheps, etc. until they've legislated away the ability to own a pet that might protect us and therefore make us more dependent on the state.

The press will be just as complicit in that effort as they have been with pit bulls, "assault" weapons, SUVs, global warming etc.

You can’t defend your analogy, and you’re blaming me?

The man is not smart enough to defend his foolish position. Comparing a vicious dog to a piece of cold steel, what horse hockey.

Funny the word "kook" should be in your tagline. Only an honest-to-god kook would think that "raising" dogs is identical to raising humans.

They're dogs. Not people.

They’re dogs. Not people.

Only a kook would concluded that from my posts. There are similiarities, no denying it, but vast differences as well.

Nowhere did I say it was ‘identical’....kooks like to make things up, attribute them to me, and then demand an explanation.

Does that description fit you?

You’re a writer, can’t you come up with something better than repeating inane cliches?

I agree. I think I’d go with the rottie. Attitude trumps size as long as the dog is tall enough to be able to land a solid bite on the arms or neck, and heavy enough to knock you off your feet. I’ve seen 60 lb Malinois put 90 lb GSD’s to shame in bite work. Prey drive, bite strength and speed can easily compensate for size. Pitts are crazy and crazy trumps size any day.

The video attached to the article states the neighbors saw the dogs involved run into a house and when confronted the people in the house denied the dogs were there.
It looks like the identity of the dogs and their owners could be cleared up in short order.

The Wingerter fellow seems fairly level-headed...

"Wingerter said pit bulls should “all be registered, and owners should have plenty of insurance on them.”

A one-time dog trainer himself, Wingerter said authorities should also make sure breeders aren’t breeding dogs to be vicious."

I think thats logical, and it should apply to all dogs, not just the PB’s.

Yep, although I could see insurance rates varying with the size of dog, owner/dog training, temperament testing, degree of enclosure...and such.
