TACOMA, Wash. -- Margaret Wingerter is amazed her Shetland pony is still alive after having its face chewed off by pit bulls.
The veterinarian needed to use nearly 300 stitches to repair the injuries.
"His face was just hanging off," Margaret said. "Both sides were literally just hanging open, gaping open."
Over the weekend, two dogs attacked the pony in the middle of the night. Neighbors rushed in with pool cues and beat the dogs away, but not before the damage was done.
Margaret was keenly aware of what happened to Sue Gorman, a Gig Resident, last week when two pit bulls entered her home and severely mauled her.
"You read about someone else like the lady that got attacked and it was like horrific, and you just it makes you sick," she said.
The dogs that attacked Gorman were captured and will likely be destroyed, but the two that attacked Margaret's pony disappeared into the neighborhood along the Puyallup River Road.
"The dogs were soaked with blood dripping off of them from the attack," said Jack Wingerter. "So those dogs went home to some parents or some family and they know something happened. But whether they come forward or not, we don't know."
The couple has grandchildren that are always around and say they now fear for their safety.
The Wingerters say the owners may believe these dogs to be harmless, but now that the pit bulls have attacked they need to be considered extremely dangerous.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigation.
OMG I had to look thru just to see if that was a real quote. LMAO! Classic.
Those questions bear repeating.
That’s exactly how we handled it in the 70’s when I was a youth in Mississippi. I couldn’t tell you how many dogs I have shot in my life.
cant \KANT\, noun:
1. The idioms and peculiarities of speech in any sect, class, or occupation.
2. The use of religious phraseology without understanding or sincerity.
3. Empty, solemn speech, implying what is not felt; insincere talk; hypocrisy.
4. A whining manner of speaking, especially of beggars.
I’m sure kids ARE statistically more likely to be bitten by a cocker spaniel. But a cocker spaniel bite rarely requires treatment beyond a band-aid, which is why, statistically, lots more people let their kids play with cocker spaniels.
Dog of peace strikes again....
I honestly did not see that when I posted my comment. I almost added something very similar, too.
“Actually if it was my pony, I would hunt the dogs down.”
Actually, I wouldn’t shed a tear if all the pit bulls in this country were hunted down. At the very least every one should be bonded and the owners should have to go through the same licensing as owning a tiger. Also hold owners “criminally” responsible for their pit’s behavior.
Ah right. Pits don’t kill people, black labs do.
Any dog that’s allowed to run in packs can become a killer.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people. See where I'm going with this?
Now you know that Shetland pony PROVOKED those sweet doggies!
It teased them, made’em mad, made them attack in self-defense!
Thats sarcasm, of course.
I love dogs, think they’re better than some people-BUT- I don’t think there’s any hope for this breed. Too much violence, aggression and derangement has been bred into the bloodlines. I don’t think it’s possible to find a pitt bull that has no aggressive, violent ancestors in its bloodline.
And genetics being what it is, traits from generations back can be inherited. DNA remembers.
I would imagine that if you're beating a dog with a pool cue, you might get to know it personally, including its breed.
Would this be a headline if they were bulldogs or mastifs?
Yes--it's the shock of a pony getting its face mauled that makes it a headline, not the breed.
So, you believe everything you read? See post 22.
Positive ID?
Ok- maybe you’re right. It coulda been a pack of those vicious weenie dogs. They’re known to viciously rip faces off every chance they get. Or...or...it was a gang of poodles DISGUISED as pitt bulls, cause it’s a conspiracy!
Yeah- that’s the ticket!
So when is the last time that anyone ever heard of any other kind of dog doing something like this? Other than possible a wild one hunting for food. This bread of dog is inherently evil.
They should have just stabbed the dogs with the pool cues. No getting away from that.
Obviously a cover-up of the exotic underground blood sport of pony/pit bull fighting.
