Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!
denied!
Um, No!!
Happy New Year, Mr. & Mrs. ExGeeEye (has a nice ring to it,doesn’t it)!! LSA
Happy New Year!
Right, it’s New Year’s Eve. lost track.
Unnngh. Home - finally.
Feeding my poor frozen pooch and changing out of werk clothes, and then I’ll head over.
LOL! She has great rhythm...
Some people listen to CDs when exercising. Gidget makes her own exercise track... ;-)
OK - We’re here... Before you come over... take a good look and listen (count cars, etc) at the houses across 93rd and tell me if you think any of those people sound like they’re having a party tonight. I’m wondering if I need to prepare the horses for fireworks.
I’ll see what I can see!
Just hope this won't be happening at your place! We're waiting for the ball to drop, and will watch the fireworks in Boston Harbor, from the nice warm comfort of our home!
It did a little, but mostly the little bottle rockets... no big deal... apparently the neighbors didn’t save any of the big ones..
It was not too bad, stood out with some fairly bored horses for a little while, came in to find dogs who were very glad to see us back. :~)
Happy New Year to you too!
Happy New Year to one and ALL. OB & LSA
We got home just after midnight last night. One of the couples returned from Disney World yesterday afternoon, so they was tired. And Luke was at their house with their younguns. But a good time was had by all.
We have a standing "date" for all of us to meet at Hooters (because it's 2 for 1 night and the wings really are that good) on Tuesday, August 12 to review all the reasons none of us are doing the Christmas show next year...Not Valerie included.... So there's that.
Today, "Corin" unveils thenewblog. I'm no longer using a pen name so I won't be posting a link here. There's not much there yet, but when there is I'll send a link via freepmail.
What a great source of entertainment, for her and everyone else, for the price of a squeaky toy. She puts more into it, and gets more out of it, than a puppy would.
Sounds like the wine group is in the same place you and ‘Not Valerie’ are with regard to how much you want to commit outside your families. I reached that point when we started homeschooling. Though I was still involved with the Parish doing things, it really wasn’t much more than I’d been doing before. I just dropped all the school fundraiser stuff. What a ‘load off’ that was!
Without too many details here, it was a hard year for everyone. We’re not the only ones considering a break.
Okay, the computer needed a good cleaning, but the forced air didn’t seem to stop the noise.
It comes and goes. Sounds like crickets on a summer night.
Am I doomed?
Hard to say. Could be a fan bearing, or a hard drive bearing. Best bet is to open it up and turn it on and see where the noise is coming from.
If it’s the main fan on the power supply... this one you can jam with something like a stiff wire (paperclip) stuffed through the mesh in the back, into the blades to jam it and make it stop. If the noise stops too... then that’s it.
If it’s a CPU fan, probably the only way to tell is with the case open.
If it’s the hard drive... does your drive ever power down when not being used? Then the noise should stop too.
Either way... I’d make good backups now.
Is it *just* a chirpy-chirpy sound? If so my hunch is fan bearing. Hard drives will chirp too, but not for very long. By the time a 10,000 rpm bearing starts to seize, there often isn’t more than a couple of hours before it smokes and chokes. A likely noise from a hard drive is a thacka-thacka-thacka sound, caused by the read/write head overrunning and whacking the stops on either end.
But fan bearings can chirp for weeks before they finally sieze up. It’s a squeakier noise.
All of the above are easy to replace though. Hard drive is more involved, to replace the data of course.
If you can get the cover off, try running the computer and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. There's usually a fan inside the power supply, one on the CPU chip, and maybe a fan for the entire case. You can disconnect the case fan for a few minutes, especially with the cover off, with no problem. The power supply fan is hard to get to, while the CPU fan keeps the whole thing running. A modern CPU chip can't run for more than a few seconds without its fan.
I've replaced cheap noisy fans, which cost only a few dollars, with more expensive (as in 10x the price) fans with magnetic flotation bearings. Any high-end geek catalog will have them. They come in a wide range of standard sizes, measured in millimeters. They also have standardized electrical connectors.
Thanks. I’ll check those out.
She’s cute!!
