The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I think I would have gone with ‘yup, it’s still right where I left it’. :-)

I may be hot on the trail of one, and maybe two, red dot sights that I set aside, and were lost. If I find them, I'll put them up for grabs here.

I've never lost a weapon, but ammo and accessories are another matter. I recently "rediscovered" two Vietnam-era GI shotgun shell pouches, one in nylon, the other in canvas. I paid a buck apiece for them, ages ago. Now they're $100+, and I don't want to part with them, even though I don't use them.

Gunbroker.com, an auction site. It's a good source for finding out what's hot out there. I don't know about formal appraisals, but it gives a good idea of what the market is doing.

A lot of Vietnam-era gear, even the nylon stuff, can go for big bucks if it's in good shape, and the markings are clear. Even more so for Korean and WWII equipment.

Of course, there are repros and ripoffs out there too. I have a transition-model Remington 1903. It's an early 1941 03 with a few of the stamped parts that would start appearing on the 03A3, mainly the trigger guard and magazine follower.

I've now learned that there are reproductions of even the lousy stamped parts. Genuine stamped 03A3 trigger guards are worth some money today, and you have to know how to tell them apart.

Definitely get that checked out. That’s a long time to put up with it. However, dozing in an easy chair is an acceptable pasttime this time of year.

ps that ‘guest room’ sounds like it could use a ‘series’ up grade.

The old Army Surplus gear does bring some amazing prices these days. I bought a web army ammo belt in HS to carry my extra shotgun shells. The individual pockets were to hold two clips of ammo. It also held three rounds of shotgun shells, which is why I bought. I think I paid a buck or two for it. It’s in vg condition with out the usual holes or rips. It still has the metal cross-rifle tag date stamped 8-30. I put it in the footlock years ago and that’s where it’s stayed.

Sigh - 17 degrees, hmm, sip, perhaps gypsy’s walk can be ‘postponed’ sip. The cat has her radiator all staked out. I think she is there for the duration.

Hope you’re feeling better and will be up and about soon. Looks like you’ll get sprung in time to whoop and holler on New Year’s Eve. Good Show.

Weird.......... I have been eyeballin a Year One car parts catalog. I can BUY a new 60’s era muscle car parts pile including frame, body, trim, wiring harness, interior, drive train etc from reproduction parts. I had no idea that industry was in place for web gear as well......LOL !

Who is paying for this stuff ? Gamers, wannabes , collectors or re-enacttors (sp?) of events like the CW, WW1, WW2, Korean and VN era wars ??

I know of a certain gun dealer on Central in ABQ NM that used to stamp new Henry and uberti clone Winchester rifles and reproduction colts with real factory markings and then do the patina refinish etc and put the guns out for sale as originals........I think he quit that when word was put out as to how many times this occurred. But it is OK IMHO to advertise ya did such and want extra money for the “art work” but never for the forgery deceit crime.

I have a few U2 camera cases (they are size of small dorm refrigerators) here full of old deuce gear to go thru now and see what I have.....

We’ve got 68 degrees here. Hopefully we’ll have some rain this weekend.

Are you on telemetry? Wearing a monitor box? If so, ask the nurse to run you a strip. Don’t tell it is for me...just for yourself.

Heh heh...she might get all defensive. If she doesn’t want to do it, don’t press it.

Did they do the conversion? Did it work?

I would’ve loved to have seen your strips before the conversion...

I’ve been working on bills all morning. Afterward, I called my agency and told them I was available for a 7p-7a hospice case tonight if they have one.

Amazing how working on bills can be so motivating. Ha ha ha!!

Well, the temperature sounds great (31 here) but not the tornado part.

One more day...

I’m back from errands. I have booze, coffee, cheese and music. Who could ask for anything more?

Also got the pup a new Nylabone. He goes through those on a regular basis and his last one was starting to disappear.

She’s busy watching Shrek III with her mom. The two of them are so cute laughing at every goofy scene.
