FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Do either of you remember how to measure the leg to get a guesstimate of the final hight of a baby?

I've always heard that you measure from the top of the cannon bone at the center of the knee joint, to the top of the coronary band and ever how many inches that is will be how many hands tall they will be. Hope's measured 15 and a half inches so they said she would be 15.2 and that's about what she is.

I was watching the weather channel map last night, and it looked like a big red paint spill right over the middle section of the country. I guess that was the hail :-o

Hope your truck's okay.

The thing about the cannon bone is what Ronnie Gaston told us, too. He has a quarter horse farm, breeds, trains. He owns Sissy’s baby’s daddy. He told us alot of stuff to look for and interpret. Some of it may be “wives tales” but it’s neat. He says to look for the swirls in the hair behind their ears. The closer to the ears they are and the more even with each other, the smarter the horse. If one is more forward than the other the horse will be softer on that side than the other, sort of left or right handed people.

Oh Beth, I am sorry you are having to go through this now. Even if it does sound, for her, like a good passing. Please let us know if you need anything.

I am sure she will be happy enough at the outfit you picked, and that’s real sweet. That’s a challenge I never had to face!

I just saw on our news that you’re having some fairly ~severe~ thunderstorm warnings overnight. Yikes. Hope it’s passing now?

Are you working today?

So what’s with the new format, and how does it work??? My “New Posts to you” in red, won’t go off...it’s showing I still have some even tho I’ve read all the ones in the list. and the little window for the bell to go off when I get a new posts still says I have 10 new post...what do you do to clear them???

Yes, I’m working 10-7 today...yes we did have some fairly severe weather thru the night...heavy heavy rain, ( we got around 3 inches) hail, wind, lightening...it seems to be letting up now. But more severe weather is forecast for tomorrow and into Thurs.

Don’t ask me about the new format, good grief now it’s green.

To clear the pager, you have to go to new pings and then “mark them as read”. Then go back to viewing all.

It’s way more steps for something that used to be automatic.

Oh dear... sorry about your severe weather coming.

If it ‘s not one thing it’s another.

I did figure out that the green ones are the ones I wrote, the ones I receive are still black.

Thanks for the info on marking them as read, that did the trick:)...I kind of like having the posts showing up on the ping page, keeps you from having to go to the thread itself.

Oh my smart husband tells me we can make the pings automatically appear as read after we’ve seen them.

Go to account, then preferences, then scroll down to this:

Pings
Behavior of the “Pings” (aka “New posts to you”) indicator.

Manual The “New posts to you” indicator stays lit until you click “Clear All” on the pings page.

Automatic The “New posts to you” indicator is always cleared when viewing the pings page.

Well Tiff called... she put out a new round bale this morning and Mia might be colicking, maybe.... mild so far. Tiff said she was laying down and biting at her sides, but got up and hasn’t done that since and seems relatively normal... she pooped.

I had her call the vet and he told her to let her out on the lawn and watch her for awhile and call him in an hour.

I told her to call if she ended up having the vet out or anything changes.

That’s really strange that she would colic on dry hay. I’ve just never heard of that, unless it was really cold in the wintertime and they just weren’t drinking enough to keep their gut moving, and I would think that water would be the LAST thing y’all would have a shortage of out there this time of year. ;o)

Hopefully it was just a gas colic and has passed now that she’s pooped, but like you said, it’s a good idea for Tiff to keep a close eye on her for a while, just to be sure.
