FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Yeah - he should have said “this horse isn’t even worth you coming back to pick up” ;~)

But he’s an honest man, apparently!

Sorry to take so long to respond. Anyway, we did turn the horses back to them and they would retreat, then right back after us again. I think if we hadn't had this little kid trying to help us getting further away from his drive all the time we would have just kept going and they would have given up eventually.

Here is wording from that ad:

Developed specifically for use in deterring aggressive animals as an alternative to pepper spray. Safe for humans and pets while providing a strong deterrent to the animal. Contains citronella, combined with a strong force of spray. Can be used by anyone that may encounter animals with aggressive behavior (delivery carriers, joggers, hikers and more). Contains approximately 10-12 one second sprays for economical use. Use while on horseback, on foot or in kennels, etc. Caution: (Although Direct Stop has shown to be as effective as 10% pepper spray with dogs, it may not stop trained attack animals, or those with a strong motivation to attack.)

It's $7.99, free shipping, so I may give it a try. <

LOL! Well, he did kinda do that when he called me to tell me he was ready, but he said it in a joking manner so I knew he was kidding. Then he proceeded to tell me all the things he liked about him.

He loves messing with horses and it shows. He just can't keep it to himself or he'd explode. When he was working on Hope's teeth last night he couldn't hardly work for stopping and telling me what he was seeing and doing and why and all that. He's very good at anything he sets his mind to. There's no half-way with him.

Sounds like good stuff. I just wonder what they mean about it being “Safe for humans and pets while providing a strong deterrent to the animal”? I would think that anything that would be painful enough to stop a dog would also be painful to humans or horses. But maybe it’s just the smell of the cintronella that the dogs find irritating. When you get it you’ll have to pay a visit to some bad dogs and let us know. Nothing like being a Guinea Pig is it! ;o)

LOL -- no - there isn't. :-)

Tell me again - that place that you go riding is Bankhead, right?

That's one of the places. We go to KC's Horse Camp too. That's just south of Bankhead off of Hwy 33. If you ever want to go some weekend, let me know and we'll meet you at either place. We're planning on going to Faye Whittemore Farm down in Jasper this coming Sunday but it looks like the whole weekend's going to be a washout. :-p

Thanks! This weekend is out but perhaps sometime soon. It would be great to put voices with faces :-)

That area you ride in looks so pretty and like a place that even in the summer would be cooler than most areas.

Well, it sure sounds like you have a great trainer. Are you going to breed any of your mares this year?

I picked up a few different kinds of ground cover today, and a geranium. There wasn’t a whole lot to pick from yet. I have enough perennials that I’m hoping with the ground cover I won’t need so many annuals. I did get the morning glory seeds. That should be enough. Hopefully I’ll have the house sold anyway by the end of summer so I don’t want to put to much in. Just enough to show the potential of the garden.

I should try some morning glory seeds on my side fence. I sure love yours, I can’t believe they grow that much just in one summer!

While I was cleaning stalls tonight, it was actually snowing!

No, not this year. Maybe next year if I sell a couple this year. As it is, I’m going to have to be drafting people to ride them for me this year. My friend Elizabeth had been riding either Hope or Grace with me fairly often until right before Christmas but she hasn’t had a lot of spare time herself since then and now that I’ve got 2 more to ride it’s just going to be nearly impossible to keep 5 horses in good enough shape that they perform well whenever I DO get around to riding them.

Good grief, that’s awful! It’s supposed to be Springtime.

I’m back from Nashville. She’s still holding on. There is a pad like spreading out from her milk bag forward. It goes all the way to right behind her front legs and to the sides of her belly. It is about 2 inches thick and firm.
Vet says she’ll go when she’s ready, but hasn’t seen her.

You are too funny. Does BladeRider know she’s a silent moviestar??? Makes me sorry I missed the ride.

I may order some of that spray. Might be good for emergencies.
It would be GREAT if you could come up for a ride. It’s not but a little over 2 hrs. from my house to Northport, but KC’s is 40 minutes closer that that.

Duchess & Hair, do y’all remember back a few years ago when one of Rose of Sharn’s mares did something like this before she foaled and we were all discussing it. It has some kind of clinical name that I can’t remember but we Googled it and read up on it. Y’all remember what that was?

Nah, not yet I think. I haven't heard from her all week. I e-mailed her today and got an automated reply that she was out of the office on Wednesday and Thursday, so I don't know where she is. I don't remember her saying anything about going out of town anytime soon. I hope she ain't sick again.

I hope not, too. It wasn’t that cold Sat. I rode around the fields close to the house. Had to try the Timberline out.
I sent her something and got an auto email back, too.

I think it’s probably edema. I wouldn’t worry about it unless she seems very uncomfortable or it hurts her if you press on it. Hate to say it but the vet is right :)

I’m thinking it was an edema but I can’t remember for sure - had us worried at the time though.
