This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Dang that’s a big horse :~) I’d like to see a horse that big doing airs above the ground ;~)
Looks like a workable place and good workable panel corrals outside!
Cool mounting block :’)
The funny part is that he’s very nimble, but so big that it’s like riding a bucking couch. I’d be toast on some of the smaller, narrower horses when they get to doing what he does. When he takes off into a gallop though, my butt comes right out of that saddle, and it’s all that I can do to hang on. He has a LOT of power. I wish that there was a video camera on Saturday, you could have seen airs above the ground more than once. I was both nervous and proud of myself for sticking it out. A couple of times I almost said “I give up!” but I didn’t want my trainer to think that I was afraid of him. She tends to jump to that conclusion quite often.
Oh believe me, they've already been explored and anything of any value is already gone. The big waterfall that we rode to on Friday had fresh dug holes all over the place back behind it, at least under the rocks that were small enough to move. That one is on National Forest land so if they're caught at it there'd be big fines involved. And the big one I was standing in on Saturday still had the buckets and garden rakes in there. That kinda surprised me too, even though it's on private land, because it's not too far off of a fairly well-traveled horse trail. I don't know if they decided there was nothing in there, gave up and just didn't feel like hauling their stuff back outta there or if they were coming back to it later. It was kinda strange.
Good job on getting the pics Beaker! Looking at that first one, I was thinking “Levi’s not all that big. His head is about even with her head.” But then I looked farther back and saw his withers and thought “Holy Sh!t, that’s a big horse!” And when I saw him snerling his nose, my first thought was “He’s getting ready to snort a big green one right out on her sleeve!” ;o) I’m glad to hear that he didn’t. The barn looks good to me. It’s better’n what I got! Thanks for showing us a peek at your part of the world. I’ll look forward to seeing some more of it now that you’ve got a camera.
Hey, your barn looks a lot better than mine does :)
Levi is so big it looks like if he threw his head up he’d hit the rafters. Big, big horse.
Odd that they leave stuff behind, including the holes. We try really hard to leave no indication of our passing and searches. Figures they have been searched plenty - they look like great places for burying the payroll :)
Well, I took the camera to work and freaked out everyone on the road as I took pictures - on my way in and on the way back - 52 of them as a matter of fact, and the drive is 22 miles each way. Now Snapfish loaded 17 of them (the trip in in part) and won’t display them. However, one of these days, I’ll get them posted.
Duchess, what happened with your pictures? I had issues yesterday too, with snapfish... it would load, but you couldn’t view the picture. It later fixed itself though.
Good morning everyone :~)
Chilly morning but pretty clear. This is the second morning I’ve fed outside instead of in the barn. I like it when I can look out and see them chewing and playing musical hay piles. All winter it’s been feed in the barn and they disappear from view a few hours.
Good morning. I had about the same issues. Pictures loaded but when I tried to bring up anything other than the thumbnails I got the dreaded red x :(
You all have a great day.
Good morning...beautiful morning here, birds singing mild temperatures. I’m starting to think about getting my garden planted. Frog, what was that stuff you told me last year to put down to stop weeds and grass from growing???
The little boys are coming this morning to play for a while then I’ll take JP to gymnastics, then lunch. After their mothers pick them up, I’ll stop at the store to buy some things to plant.
Becky
Good morning! We don’t have much available to plant yet... temps still a little too cold at night.
Good luck with yours!
I haven’t really looked yet, there may not be much here either. I hate to say that I think we are done with freezing temps. Last year we had a hard freeze in April. I can go ahead tho, and get the morning glory seeds planted. Even if we do freeze and they get killed, it’s not that big of a deal, they come back and grow fast, and the seeds are cheap.
Becky
Well, I’m real eager to start planting some things here too! At least I’m eager on the sunny days, it’s not going to be one of those today.
Our grass seed still hasn’t germinated... I figure when that starts, I can seriously consider getting other things to put in the ground. :~)
It's called Preen. It's granular and comes in a big yellow jug with a sprinkler spout. You just turn it upside down and sprinkle it until you get a pretty even coverage with the little grains spaced evenly over the whole bed about a quarter inch apart, or there abouts. It'll last about 3 months, so you might want to reapply around the end of June. I did that last year and didn't have any weeds at all. It doesn't effect bulbs either, so tulips and stuff like that will come on up, but then so will wild onions, so I guess you've gotta take the good with the bad. And it's not going to keep Bermuda grass out of there because most of it doesn't come up from seed, it spreads from runners, so you've still gotta either pull that or spot treat it witn RoundUp.
Well, I went and picked up Goose from the trainer’s yesterday evening and left Whirl up there for him to work for a month. I took Hope too and let him work on her teeth. He pulled caps off of 2 of her 3yr molars, floated her, put a bit-seat on her lower front molars and pulled her 3-and-a-half year incisors. Poor girl, he sedated her but she still didn’t appreciate it. He was out of the good stuff that he normally uses so he had to give her more than one shot of this other stuff before he got done.
He was real pleased with how Goose turned out though. Said he thought he was the best one I’d ever brought up there. He definitely LOOKS different, more grown up I guess. All his baby fat is gone. They definately get put through the wringer when they go up there, but they sure do come out the better for it in the long run. I’ll probably let him have a week off because he’s got a cinch gall and his chin is a bit raw.
I didn’t get him back to the barn until about 10:30 last night, so rather than turn him out in the dark and risk the others running him through the fence I put him in the barn isle by himself and closed the gates. He had the whole roll of hay to himself and plenty of water so he was happy. I fed him, gave him a good brush-down and put salve on his boo-boos and he seemed like he really appreciated it.
Bob sure wanted to get in there to show him who was boss though. I let him out this morning on my way to work and of course Bob had to chase him all over the pasture. But then he quit chasing Goose and started chasing the mares because they kept on wanting to go over and check Goose out, and of course he couldn’t have HIS mares doing that. ;o)
Ol’ Tennessee was just standing around watching it all, like he was thinking “Better him than me! I’m so glad I’m beyond all that foolishness.”
Well, I look forward to new pictures of you on Goose then! :~D
The trainer wanted to keep him pretty badly. Said he’d really tear ‘em up at these little country shows around here. Of course he made the mistake of telling me how good he was before he asked me how much I’d take for him. Apparently he didn’t want him bad enough to pay me what I wanted for him though. ;o)
Wow! That’s a prize worth working for. I’ll have to go check it out. Thanks!
