This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It actually turned out fine, he is cranky but he will listen to reason and decided that I was o.k. even if not a mule person. He did try to rear and run with me once when the vet approached him with the stethoscope . . . but I just went with him and we did a lap of the paddock and came back, then he stood fine. (I figured having just met him it was no time to resort to the 2x4, with the vet there and all < g >. Seriously, he was badly abused before my friend got him, he isn't really cranky, just fearful that any stranger is going to beat him.)
And he was fine, the vet says he isn't colicked and doesn't have any teeth issues (actually he doesn't have ANY teeth, that's part of the problem). But the vet thinks it's just that sometimes old horses (or mules) get picky about their food. My friend's going to give him carrot puree (which I dubbed "mule smoothies" which made the vet laugh) and some molasses and whatnot on his food to try to perk him up a little, and move him to the round pen where he can get a little fresh grass.
So, I got a call from another vet, friend who is skiing this weekend in Calif and he gave me instructions for penicillen, bute and walking until Reese could get her, walking helped Friday drop the placenta (all in one piece) she'll be on bute and penicillen through Wednesday. Baby's breathing problem at birth and the retained placenta due to red bag - if we hadn't been there to deliver the kid and give him mouth to mouth we'd have lost him.
Anyway, all is well, both are fine.
Hoping you have the retained placenta resolved by now.

I guess the pictures are deceiving. None are really that close to any trees. I will only burn the piles one at a time so I can have the hose close by. They are too far apart to have a hose close to all of them.
Unfortunately, we all forgot to get a ladder so we could get the ones on the house. The boys are going to have to get on the roof to cut them, so the ones I really wanted to take care of are still a problem. From the ground it doesn’t appear they are doing damage...crossing my fingers.
Becky
No way would I have the courage to burn those piles. Maybe the volunteer fire department would come out and burn them for training?
I hope that everything turns out OK with the mule. Soaked hay cubes are good for old guys with no teeth. It turns it into hay soup, and that way that can at least eat something.
I'll pass along the soaked hay cubes. He doesn't like mash, though, so he may not like it. Who knows? (these picky eaters!)
Well, thank goodness. Guess that placenta couldn’t make up its mind whether to leave early, or to stay late . . . .
The whole business was/is odd. The part that is the water? bag was all twisted like a rope and I’m not sure why it retained because it was all in one piece - maybe just not heavy enough to pull the one horn out until she started walking. I’ve never seen anything like that happen in thirty years. Just as soon I never saw it again too.
He sure is LOUD! :~)
Glad the placenta came out OK... and glad Friday was there with you and not in who knows who’s hands.
We got back several hours ago from town and I guess the whole experience just wore me out because I’ve been on the couch sleeping ever since. ;~\
Lazy day.
“who knows whos hands”
Who knows who finally called about noon. Wants us to send him a picture of the baby. (he lives about 30 minutes away).
So is he going to claim responsibility for the baby? Glad everything turned out ok. That baby is a looker!
LOL...homebody:) But I know what you mean. I had breakfast with a friend then church, then to a birthday part for the friend I had breakfast with. I’m glad to be home for a few hours before I have to go back to church. After being around people for any length of time, I need to get away, watch TV and have some mindless distraction for awhile:)...not sure how working is going to work.
Duchess...I’ve burned many brush piles. I will not say I’m an expert, that’s asking for trouble, but as long as I burn them one at a time with the hose close by, I feel OK about burning them. Especially if I can get to it shortly after rain. I’ll start with the one in the arena as it will be the easiest and get some practice about controlling it.
I really don’t think the fire dept. would help....there are just too many of this type of brush piles around right now due to the ice storm.

You know I’ve never had a horse that liked mash either...
I’d say it is a good sign he is eating. Hoping everything straightens out for him.

Hey does a mouse on a computer wear out like keyboards do? I’m not sure if my mouse is not working well because it’s just old, or because it’s wore out too.
Becky
I have to say, even tho I know you and Bob don’t want any more horses, I was hoping “who knows who” never called:)
Becky
How GORGEOUS! I know you are so excited.
If so, they can get dust inside via the little roller ball on the bottom. My brother took one of mine apart and cleaned it for me, but as I was typing this I looked at the bottom of mine and it looks like it only has one little tiny screw which is really recessed and might be hard to get to. I've also had to replace the mice occasionally (mouses? What is plural for a computer mouse anyway??? LOL)
