FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

No, I haven’t made relish yet. I’ll try that. My son loves the zucchini dill pickles - he took two more jars home yesterday.

It sure would be something if a hit man had left a body in that boat, and nobody noticed for years and years and years . . . . .

. . . nah, sounds like a bad novel. Anything could have washed into or out of that boat, and would have stunk after awhile.

I’ll pass that tip on to my son - he’s getting really tired of providing expensive meals for the critters. He’s trapped several and moved them back into the mountains but it seems that they tell their friends. He lives just a couple of blocks from the Sierras and the edge of town. Frequently they have herds of deer meandering through that part of town.

Tell him to make sure to use STRONG stakes and lots of them, and fasten the wire thoroughly to them. It's got to be strong enough to support the weight of a raccoon without pulling out of the ground!

If you lay flat rocks on top of the chicken wire at the edge of the pond, as well as burying the edges, it helps too.

Thanks, I’ll give him all the information. Right now he has a personal war going on with the wildlife. He’s determined to have Koi, the wildlife is determined to have them for dinner.

I've made refrigerator pickles with yellow squash this summer and kosher dills with zucchini - both turned out great. Next is to make some relish I think :)

I haven't put up anything at all in quite a few years - I did get enough blueberries for a pie and enough apples for another pie. Our fruiting trees/bushes are just now getting large enough to bear and we've had a drought here this year. Wednesday it's supposed to be 107 degrees (not including the heat index.)

Yesterday my husband and son-in-law put up a fence for the gelding arriving sometime this week. I don't know how they did it in the heat - the only time the temp drops below 100 is when the sun goes down.

This is the first year I've been putting things up for a long time. Nevada is a little difficult to garden in but this year I've had a very prolific garden.

I didn't get any fruit this year, very late freeze got all the blossoms. I'm hoping next year to get peaches and apples put up.

I can't imagine putting up a fence in 107 degree weather - you have two very determined men around :) What kind of gelding is coming?

Good morning.

Just in from riding this morning...very hot...the heat index is suppose to be 110, real temp 103. We needed to get done early.

Hair, MT: Thanks, it was fun. Jenny and I figured that after a few more, she could walk beside the horse, while I lead and let him sit by himself.

AAM: I pretty much figure even if nothing got stuck in the boat to cause the stink it was going to stink anyway...there would have been seat cushions that got nasty in water. It also seems like an incredible way to dispose of a body if that’s what it was:). It would be obvious foul play with it being in this creek...in a lake it could be an accident, but not in this creek:)

Hard to believe - I don't know what kind of horse he is.

Warning, long story coming here ....

We had horses off and on years ago and got busy and so we sold our Arab gelding. We had decided not to have any more horses - just too busy, we thought, even though we have 36 acres out here, some of which is good pasture.

About 3 weeks ago my husband and our youngest and two friends went on a guided trail ride in Montana. Meanwhile back here, our middle child (who lives next door on our land) told her husband that she would like to get a horse for their children. He was very negative about it and then a few days later she caught him researching horses online. Out in Montana, I mentioned to my husband that our youngest wanted to take riding lessons. So Mister "I never want another horse" says, well, we'll probably need to buy a horse.

When we got home, all of us find out we're all thinking about buying a horse at the same time without discussing it with each other. Then, our daughter mentioned all this to her cousin, who has ridden for years but is now expecting a baby. She told my daughter, "You can have my horse, he needs a really good home and I'll still get to see him and ride him if he's at your place."

So, we're buying a horse that has been owned by someone we know and well cared for, and we know is good with children.

There's so much we don't know and I saw the saddleclub thread, so here I am. Four of us are starting riding lessons next week. My two daughters and I have taken lessons before but it's been several years, so we're pretty rusty. Also, we want to brush up on care and all that entails.

Any must have/must do advice is welcome. We have the fresh water situation handled, the area they have fenced in is about 6 acres of mixed pasture and shade. He's been in a pasture situation so he's used to having access to grass already. They've started on the stalls so that will be handled by the time cold weather arrives (if it ever does.)

Congratulations:) That’s great, it’s so much fun when it’s a family affair:)

What type of riding do you all plan to do, western, English, showing, pleasure trial....????

Please be sure to post pictures of the new horse and you all at your lessons.

Becky

Hey, you came to the right place :) It's great that the whole family is in agreement on getting the horse and fantastic that you are getting a horse that has been well loved, and well trained.

It sounds like he will have a great place to live, 6 acres of pasture and water. My horses would all think they were in heaven if they had pasture - everything is dry lot here, need water rights and massive irrigation to produce pasture. Hope you will post pictures when he gets there.

Thanks for the welcome!

At this point I think we will go Western - that's what all his tack is. I took English lessons previously, but grew up riding western. I'll post some pictures when he gets settled in. :-)

We’re not doing ~anything~ today. Was rainy, now the excuse is just lazy :~)

Watching a movie... then gonna clean the stalls.

Tuscaloosa Goldfinch, welcome to the thread, I look forward to hearing more from you and the new horse :~)

Well, I haven’t done much today, too hot.

I’m going to have to be on the horse by 8 in the morning to get any kind of a ride in:\

I don’t understand the summer we’re having... it’s grey, and normally, a perfect, nice cool day to ride. We just both felt more like being lazy. (~watches Becky roll her eyes at us ;~D)

Stalls got stripped though, and we talked a lot about future projects we could do when we had more time energy and money :~)
