Mom Booted From Plane Goes National; Toddler Bucks, Whines During Interview

NEW YORK -- The Gwinnett County mother kicked off an airplane with her 19-month old son tried to tell her side of the story Friday morning, but her son's crying drowned out part of the interview.

Garren Penland, 19-months old, got so unruly during his mom's chat with 'Good Morning America' anchor Diane Sawyer, co-anchor Chris Cuomo had to take the toddler off the set.

While Kate Penland explained her child was well-behaved on the Continental Express flight, little Garren kicked, wiggled and squirmed out of his mother's arms.

At one point he climbed up on a coffee table and rifled through Sawyer's scripts.

When Sawyer handed him a model Space Shuttle to distract him, Garren rolled it off the table and onto the floor.

Kate Penland said she and Garren were booted from the flight last month by a flight attendant who suggested she use benadryl to calm her son down.

Your kids must be retarded. At nineteen months one of mine was in his second year at Stanford. The other had climbed Everest—barefoot.

How about a kid and a non-kid area?

I'm in favor of that for just about every type of public arena -- restaurants, theaters. Stores should have special hours where kids can't shop. (And whose brilliant idea was it to make the kid sized shopping carts in grocery stores? Just what I need is little Johnny ramming the back of my knees with a stupid little shopping cart.)

Don't get me wrong... I like kids... I just don't think I could eat a whole one.

I just watched the video. I’m a firm beliver in spankings but I saw no reason in this video. What did they expect.? He’s a little boy, in an environment he isn’t going to do well in. If the mom kept him in his seat, sometimes that’s about all you can expect.

Neal Boortz was all over this story this AM on his radio show. He’d seen the interview, commented extensively about how poorly behaved the kid was during it, and how little the mother did to attempt to control the kid. He really wants someone who was there, to call him.

For those who don’t know Boortz, he’s a top-10 nationally syndicated radio talk show host, calls himself a small-l libertarian, but is hated by the Libertarians because he supports Bush and the way we’ve fought the war on radical Islam, and because of their stance on drug legalization.

she all but told her to drug her kid.

I remember a time when a flight attendant with unruly children on board would ask the Captain to drop the cabin pressure a tad. It seems that children are more affected by "oxygen deprivation" then adults and at about 6000' above sea level they get sleepy and drop off. The adults don't even notice.

GtG

Continental should compensate her with a free round trip ticket for her and her kid on Delta.

Actually child benadryl is not uncalled for during a flight, especially if they have a head cold or sinus infection.

Not Delta, that is what I usually fly out of Atlanta.

Sounds like a typical kid to me. Probably hot, tired, cranky, needed a nap. After the slap on the behind, of course (smile).

Our stores have little car carts. These are great, because they keep my little boys occupied with pretending to drive. They even forget to ask, "Can we have that? And that?"

I only had one who threw tantrums. After getting cold water thrown in his face, he soon learned it didn’t work.

The knee-jerk bragging about spanking gets really stale. Sure spanking can be useful as a measured part of discipline, but there’s so much more to discipline than walloping your kid.

I don’t know how it became part of conservative “street cred” to brag about walloping your kid. The bragging has come to be reflexive in threads like this, and is tiresome and juvenile.

However, that picture of the kid duct taped to the wall is really funny!

Yes, it is. People need to realize that there are two sides to this tale. My son flew out of Anchorage with his little girl and they wouldn’t even give her a glass of milk because he didn’t pay for an extra seat. No food, no drink. He had to give her his. A drink of milk probably wouldn’t have hurt them so much.
