June 20, 2007, 12:30PM Angry crowd kills man riding in car that struck child
By LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON Associated Press
AUSTIN A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said today.
The man who was killed Tuesday night had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said. The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40, of Austin. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The beating began after the car struck the child as it entered an apartment complex's parking lot, said Commander Harold Piatt, who leads the department's homicide division.
The driver got out of the car to check on the 3- or 4-year-old girl and was confronted by several people, Piatt said. When they began to assault him, Morales got out of the car to help and was attacked as well.
The driver got away and is cooperating with investigators, police said. Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified but said anywhere from two to 20 people may have participated in the attack.
When police arrived, Morales was lying in the parking lot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death, and Piatt said no guns or knives were used.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a city-sponsored Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred, though Piatt said he did not know whether anyone involved had attended. The daylong party featured a parade, a motorcycle show, music, food and events for children.
Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.
I did not call it a dup - I merely referred to an article on the same subject. And you might notice the time stamps - my post and the one above where posted at the same SECOND - my esp is not owrking too well I guess. :-)
I was thinking the same thing. With almost everyone having cell phones, I would think as long as you promptly notify the police, they would not press charges. But then again, there are probably plenty of 'Nifongers' out there who would jump at the chance to increase their hit rate by charging someone in that instance.
Arm and leg control now!
It was a Juneteenth gathering - that was all I needed to know
Morales’ sister, Margaret Morales, who lives in an apartment complex where the incident happened, said her brother was riding home with a man she knew only as “Victor” from a painting job. She said a child came to her door shortly after the incident and told her what happened.
Margaret Morales said that when she showed up at the scene, she found her brother bleeding from the head.
“(Last night) was one of the worst nights I’ve ever had in my life,” she said.
Gathered for a Juneteenth Celebration... Is there an unmentioned racial component to the story that the MSM has chosen to ignore”?
...I lived in Austin for 7 years until 2000. “Juneteenth” is a “black” holiday and is pretty much hands off to any others. Lots of malt liquor etc. Also, known as “We Hate White People” day. Not a good day to go roaming around certain neighborhoods.
Bonfire of the Vanities.
When police arrived, Morales was lying in the parking lot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A greater love hath no man than to give up his life for a friend.
All the mob did here was import their culture and values into the US.
If you have an accident in C.A. or Mexico, and someone is killed, even if it is not the driver's fault, the family or mob will just up and kill the driver.
Happens all the time.
I want to thank President Bush and other Amnesty supporters for allowing this sort of cultural importation into my country.
It is really great to see the American traditional rule of law break down into smelly third-world anarchy like this.
Thanks, George Bush.
This is the kind of stuff we hear about in third world countries....or France.
Huh? And what would you call Austin?
If one does decide to stop, one should have a gun and a sword. Why? Swords don’t run out of ammo.
A couple of questions —
What the #$%%^ is a 3-4 year old child doing up at 9:30 at night in a @#$%^ parking lot?
Where the #@$%^& were the adults who were supposed to be supervising this child?
Anybody think that if it had been a crowd of angry white males that the race of the animals who did this would have been the LEAD sentence of the story?
I was in a similar situation but it was in the backwoods of Nigeria. We had instructions from the Nigerian police that if any incident occurred between us and the locals that the very first thing we should do is to drive away from the area as quickly as possible and go to the nearest police station. “Incidents” with the locals included something as insignificant as accidentally running over someone’s chicken. One could get mauled by the locals for running over a chicken.
I wouldn’t expect the kind of conduct described in the posted story to be happening in this country but.....one always has to consider the source of the violence.
The incident I described was in Kalamazoo, MI. It did teach me a very valuable life lesson!
Another Juneteenth beating.
President Bush certainly shares in the continuation of this nightmare, but it’s been going on for decades. You need to put the blame equally to all administrations to have credibility. Since you don’t you just sound inane.
Just trying to help.
Blacks and Hispanics are not too friendly toward eachother—apparently! How tragic. It’s not safe in American anymore.
The mob appears to be made up of people whose ancestors have been in the U.S. for many generations. Read the thread.
The Mexican/Hispanic guy was killed protecting the driver of the vehicle. He was killed by a mob of black people celebrating Juneteenth.
So my question is, is it the values/culture of a man killed protecting someone that you hate or something else?
The lone guy killed died a hero, the mob will live as cowards.
