HONOLULU — Astronomers have discovered 28 new planets outside of our solar system, increasing to 236 the number of known exoplanets, revealing that planets can exist around a broad spectrum of stellar types, from tiny, dim stars to giants.

An artist's concept of the Neptune-sized planet GJ436b (right) orbiting the M-class dwarf star Gliese 436 at a distance of 3 million miles.

There are another 100 that are possible, but the results have not been verified by the head honcho of the exoplanet authority.

I am going to start naming the planets. I don’t care if anyone else adopts the name. Something like the planet Godzilla sounds better than GJ436b (that sounds like an expensive part for a Grundig World Band radio). “You see, sir, the GJ436b in your multiband radio is on the fritz and we’ll have to order a replacement from Stuttgart. It’ll cost you $90 plus labour.”

One idea — just assign the names based on the series of (known) first names in a large phone directory. :’)

I plan to name the exoplanets after actors and characters from B-grade sci-fi movies. Out there is a planet with John Agar’s name on it.
