SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - When the aliens finally invade Earth, you may wish you had listened to Travis Taylor and Bob Boan.
And if the invasion follows the plot of a typical Hollywood blockbuster, they might also be the guys called in at the last minute to save the day.
After all, they have written "An Introduction to Planetary Defense," a primer on how humanity can defend itself if little green men wielding death rays show up at our cosmic doorstep.
And yes, they're serious.
"The probability really is there that aliens exist and are old enough to have technology to enable them to come here," Taylor said in an interview.
Taylor and Boan are hardly basement-dwelling paranoids obsessed with tinfoil hats and Area 51. Taylor holds advanced degrees in astronomy and physics, and is an associate at consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. He and Boan have done consulting work for the Defense Department and the U.S. space agency NASA.
But their views have won few audiences outside of science fiction conventions, and their book is published by BrownWalker Press, which specializes in fringe topics and books with titles like "The Science and Lore of the Plant Cell Wall" and "ESP and Psychokinesis."
Taylor acknowledged alien invasion is hardly a mainstream concern but said it is naive to assume -- as scientists like the late Carl Sagan did -- that any beings advanced enough to master star travel will have evolved beyond war.
"It's a wonderful idea that has no basis in reality," Taylor said.
FERMI'S BLUNDER?
Taylor and Boan -- along with co-authors R.C. Anding and T. Conley Powell -- revisit two issues that frequently pop up in the debate about whether homo sapiens is alone in the universe: Drake's Equation and Fermi's Paradox.
The formula drawn up by U.S. astronomer Frank Drake in 1960 tries to estimate how likely contact with an alien civilization is given factors such as the number of habitable planets.
Taylor and Boan plugged in what they felt were conservative estimates, such as that aliens cannot travel faster than 10 percent of the speed of light.
After crunching the numbers, they say it is possible that our Milky Way galaxy harbors thousands of intelligent alien species and that there is a "high probability" that one or two of them visit Earth every century.
But if there are so many aliens out there, why haven't we heard from them already?
That is the question famously posed by the physicist Enrico Fermi in 1950 to dismiss speculation by his colleagues that intelligent life should be routine.
Taylor and Boan are convinced Fermi got it wrong. Even if aliens used Godlike technology to jump across thousands of light years in a single day, they would still need millions of years to explore all the star systems in the galaxy.
They simply may not have stumbled across our neck of the woods yet.
MUJAHIDEEN-STYLE RESISTANCE
Taylor and Boan started thinking about how to respond to an aggressive extraterrestrial attack during a 2001 discussion about defending against terrorist attacks.
"One thing that popped into my mind was that the only way Americans would be in an asymmetric war on the other side would be if we were attacked by aliens. Everyone chuckled, but then after a minute the comments started setting in," Taylor said.
"Then we really got to talking about it and we thought, well, you know, we really might need this contingency plan anyway," Taylor said.
Failure to prepare may mean mankind will have to dig in and fight with improvised weapons and hit-and-run tactics, much the same way Islamic extremists have battled the U.S. military in Iraq, Taylor said.
"You'd have to create an insurgency, a mujahideen-type resistance," Taylor said. "The insurgents know how to win this war against us. It also tells us that if we were attacked by aliens, this is our best defense."
LOL.
Or, maybe if we stuff kudzu in their gas tanks it will REALLY foul things up??
I doubt we will see any alien or non earth individuals until we develope something like a warp drive or a global effort to reach beyond our galaxy, any that do drop by and look at us currently would logically NOT share any advances in technology and may even regard us as insects or a subspecies. I think we may very well do a parrallel history similar to Star Trek, after a global war and a LOT of people die the planet reorganizes to never let it happen again and we are then recognized as an intelligent species capable of intersteller travel.
OTOH if what happens is like a V or Independance day scenario it may be a non-hitech solution that will allow us to prevail, obviously what first comes to mind is HG Wells, War of the Worlds where it was the smallest microbes that killed the invaders. Our weapons systems for what its worth is not really hi tech as compared to Star Wars, Star Trek and the such.
What I think will happen if its a humanoid species that is like in the V series our leaders roll into bed with them and basically capitulate.
If I was a world leader I would develope a doomsday device, something that will crack the earth asunder, when invaded let these aliens know we will die before we give in, sorta like a MAD deterrant. Or we develope super weapons or nano robotic warriors to be used as a germ warfare, they invade the aliens body and kill them like internal microscopic warriors.
“Taylor and Boan are hardly basement-dwelling paranoids obsessed with tinfoil hats and Area 51.”
Sounds like the “basement-dwelling paranoids” might be right.
I’ve read a couple of times that Reagan’s Star Wars missile defense was really aimed at UFO defense.
uh, oh sure. Goes without saying.
yep
Space aliens are demons sent by Satan.
Art Bell? that you?
So, when the space aliens show up and you're running for your lives, slip a Lindt 80% octane bar under my door and I'll see what I can do about saving you and your family.
(I have a Slim Whitman CD in our Emergency Supplies box.)Man, that was a funny movie. I have to watch it again.
Read the excellent materials from the following sites and see if you still retain such smug skepticism:
Guy Malone is the real deal. Very solid individual and a solid Christian. Used to have abduction experiences. Has helped a lot of families stop such goings on that had been occurring down through their family for generation after generation for hundreds of years.

An excellent article available here:
http://www.alienresistance.org/angels_and_aliens.htm
begins:
In February of 2002, The History Channel flew Guy Malone to Los Angeles to interview him as part of a special entitled “Ufos in the Bible.” Producer Gabe Vandervort sent Malone a list of 10 questions he would like Guy to discuss, the answers to which were typed out beforehand, to rehearse from (which were posted below).
While grateful for the opportunity at first, please note that the special which aired DID NOT IN FACT faithfully represent Malone’s answers, but instead merely spliced in certain things said to affirm the flawed premise of the show. They did this with others who have likewise gone on record saying the same was done to them. That story and Malone’s response is here. Mike Heiser’s response is here.
Question #5 Go Here for all 10 questions and answers
In the Bible, angels are mentioned hundreds of times, often exhibiting super-human characteristics like the ability to walk through walls, read minds and communicate telepathically. How do these accounts compare with the mysterious beings of other cultures? What might be the explanation?
How do angels compare to aliens? (NOTE - The opening portion of this reply “corrects” the question itself; scroll down for comparison.)
This (first statement) is perhaps a popular assumption - and just because of that Im glad you brought it up but it is very incorrect. I stayed up late one night and counted appearances of angels in the Bible. While you can type in the word angel or angels into a computer Bible and get “hundreds” of matches, reading through with a Concordance I got just over 2 dozen actual appearances in the Old Testament, and less than that in the New (not counting Revelation). While I did count the same angel appearing over several verses as “one,” I also gave credit for the same story being told by different people as two or more to even it out.
About half of these appearances in the Old Testament specify “the angel of the Lord,” which is also known as a theophany when God appears as an angel, before the Incarnation in Jesus Christ. So these instances are not really “angels” in the sense were discussing. Many more times, the angel appears in a dream or a trance or some other heavenly vision, which means the human witness was now “on their turf” and the idea of supernatural characteristics becomes moot, simply because they were not interacting in the physical realm at this time. (There is Biblical evidence to suggest that angels do have the ability to induce a trance, or deep sleep, to bring the human into their realm. This is very interesting in regard to the abduction phenomenon.) But no matter how you count them, angels actually appear not much more than 50 times in scripture, and certainly not even one hundred times, much less hundreds.
While angels certainly do have supernatural abilities, youre also going to be hard-pressed to show me any instances in the Bible where they, “walk through walls, communicate telepathically or read minds.” They sometimes appear inside of a room, which may be said to have walked through the wall, but thats not the way scripture describes the process, ever. They just appear. If you can show me even one instance where they walk through a wall, read someones mind or deliver a telepathic message - no matter how far you have to stretch the interpretation - Ill give it to you for the sake of argument. But leaving out detailed dreams recounted by the scribe, I dont think you can show me two.
All of THESE properties and abilities are very like what the “mysterious beings of other cultures” are reported to do however (as well as so-called aliens), so with that said I think were already well on the way to distinguishing that they are not reporting the activities of true Biblical angels at least not the good ones whom the scriptures give detailed accounts of. All of these abilities may be true of angels, however, but we are already far from saying that UFO aliens, Jinnes or Jenies of the Koran, or any of the other entities in question actually can be directly classified as Biblical angels, serving God.
But now lets compare angels and aliens :
In the Bible, when they appear on earth, angels appear as human and they are quite beautiful even Lucifer is described as an angel of light. Aliens appear as humanoid, and (by all accounts) are pretty ugly. They are the thin greys, the monstrous Reptillians, and then the less reported but overall very attractive Nordics. (However, these “Nordics” are often thought to be half human hybrids.)

Obviously, they will want our pretty women. So, some of us must volunteer to help some of our women hide out. I will help Anna . . . |
I hold no religious beliefs and there is no evidence I am aware of at all of alien visitions to earth. So all that is wasted on such as I.
But you go with what works for you.
Unless the little the little green buggers are bullet-proof they will find me and most of my Texas neighbors pretty well prepared.
Why dont you give me the synopsis?
There are multiple stories repeated over many years of the following sorts of things with guns:
1. guns just wouldn’t fire; wouldn’t work—regardless of simiplicty of the gun.
2. guns have fired and bullets have been seen to leave the gun in very slow motion and then in a short trajectory fall to the ground a few feet ahead of the gun.
3. guns have fired and bullets have been seen leave the gun in slow motion or unseen at normal speed only to hit some force field between the guns and the ET’s and then fall to the ground.
4. similarly, bullets have been seen to bounce off a forcefield shield around the ET’s and/or their craft with not the slightest effect on the ET’s or craft.
5. Guns have become hot—too hot to hold.
I don’t think the summaries help a great deal.
It’s best to read the multiple narratives from a wide diversity of sources and a wide diversity of experiencers in their own words.
Though Stephen Greer’s DISCLOSURE PROJECT’s DVD’s with several hundred military officers and other trained observers and folks working around ET’s and UFO’s offer excellent info as well.

Why don't aliens act like scientists say they should?
Skeptics have stated that the abduction phenomenon does not exist because of the alien behavior that abductees report. If they were here, they would not be repeatedly abducting people to get eggs and sperm. They would gestate fetuses in vitro rather than using human hosts.
These arguments are culture-bound notions of how aliens should act and not based on any sense of reality. They have been fashioned into a sort of dogma, which has become a litmus test of "reality." If the abduction phenomenon does not fit that dogma, it does not exist.
We must confront the abduction evidence for what it is. The phenomenon is what it is. All we can do is chronicle what is happening, sort out the aliens' behavior and try to make sense of it. Our culturally determined expectations of how aliens should or should not act are of little consequence in the absence of evidence for their motivations. Investigators must analyze what is happening, not what should be happening. The abduction phenomenon is extremely logical and rational. Everything the aliens do is for a reason. Apparently, repeated abductions, repeated taking of eggs and sperm, and using women as hosts for fetuses are part of their plan.
[from David M. Jacobs FAQ]
IIRC, such things have occasionally worked—very rarely.
But the human had to swing the club etc. before the ET was aware of what was about to happen.
There have been tales where the human was picking up a club, knife or whatever and then in the midst of doing so just “forgot” what he was doing and left the club alone in a kind of zoned out state.
Sorry. I need hard evidence, verifiable, concrete. In my face and provable by more then one certiable source.
In other words, what I would accept would make headlines in every paper in the world.
I am a hard ass skeptic.
With that in mind.
I also run my seti@home software looking for radio signals.
So I am an optimist too.
But that is the extent of it.
So unless you got info that Bush is going to make an announcement to the nation on a discovery of aliens.
I am not really going to be interested.
