Red Sox vs Yankees 2007--Seasonal Thread
04/20/07 | Misterrob

Posted on 04/20/2007 8:07:32 AM PDT by misterrob

The Sox and Yankees are resuming their long standing rivalry with and a mix of old and new faces. The Sox have upgraded their team with additions of JD Drew, Julio Lugo and Dice-K. The Yankees return with changes to the starting rotation and the subtraction of Gary Sheffield. Both teams figure to compete deep into the season.

For two states without much to brag about with respect to their elected officials,

Chucky and Hidabeast vs the Flip Flopping Gigalo and the Swimmer

or

The Spitter vs Coupe Deval

Here's to another season of Yankees vs Red Sox on FR!

Game over, Yankees win a close one, 4-3.

Big Pop Up chokes in the clutch. Just when he had us thinking he was back...

Oh well. Team went down fighting and no quit. This was a game they could have won with some better hitting early on.

Popi got jammed; them Yankees were sweating bullets in the 9th. Detroit almost closed to within 1 game of the Yanks in the wildcard race.

Mientkiewicz saved the Yankees today with his glove work at first base. Made me long for Mr. 'All Thumbs' Giambi to be out there.

Rivera doesn’t give you much to work with but Ortiz muffed one hittable pitch then pulled pulled an inside pitch for strike 2. He went up there looking to swing and he certainly fouled off ball 3.

Good game. Excellent pitching duel between Clemens and Schilling. I was entirely convinced that Rivera was going to blow it their at the end. Yankees badly needed this win toinght to keep the 2 game lead over the Tigers in the wildcard division. Now if we can figgure out to beat the damn Orioles (something we haven’t been able to do all season), we should be able to pretty much wrap up the wildcard this week as Detroit is going to have their hands full with the Indians. Oh well, hopefully we’ll see you Red Sox again in the ALCS.

The problem with the Yankees this year is that they have been only a .500 team against the Eastern division rivals. With this win today, the Yankees are just 30 - 29.

A recent quote from Joe Torre, "If we can't win the games we're suppose to win, then we don't deserve to win."

The old guys really turned the clock back. To bad Schilling had to hang a few pitches that inning because this was a night he really deserved to win. Roger looked good as well.

Rivera had no control tonight. Lucky to survive he was.

Do you think this series might have gone differently if Manny had been in the line-up? As I recall, he was hitting pretty well just before his oblique injury. Of course he was also hitting into a lot of double plays...

Double plays happen when you get men on base. That’s a function of trying to pull putside pitches and topping the ball.

Ellsbury has been great replacement and the offense has not suffered. Francona needs to have a standing rule that if this kid is on base he steals. Tito simply doesn’t use the speed his team has. He instead does hit and runs with Mike Lowell of all people.

Manny would have made no difference in game 1 and game 2 was a beat down. Ellsbury scored a run tonight so he was effective. Schilling’s lack of command of his breaking pitch was the difference tonight really.

Good tight games though. We really needed to win tonight and couldn’t come through.

Yup, this is what my husband keeps saying: C'mon Terry... baseball fundamentals... move the runners along! Steals, sacrifice bunts and flys, etc. Tito doesn't use his talented players well at times.

Great thread, misterrob... thanks! We'll know soon if the Red Sox and Yanks face each other again this year.

Agreed. Great thread. Looking forward to the playoff thread after the Sox clinch the best record and decide which playoff format they want to force in the first round.

Thanks for the thread, Misterrob. While I disagreed with you on almost everything you said, many of your arguements you made were well thought out and very good. While I loathe and despise everything there is about the Red Sox organization, I love the rivalry between the two teams. And I really would much rather the Yankees be playing the Sox in the ALCS than either the Indians or Angels, even if they were to lose. It’s just something special when these two teams play.

I just love hating the Red Sox, that comes with being a Yankees fan. Anyways, hopefully this thread will live on in the ALCS.

I don’t know if I could take another piece of postseason drama.

However, if we meet up then this thread should live and i hope the FR fans will make use of it.

Are you watching this BS happening in Toronto with freakin' Eric Gagne? WHY did Tito keep him in??? We were WINNING this game! UNBELIEVABLE... Blue Jays now ahead 4-2.

Gagne lost two easy wins in Baltimore back in August. Gagne is losing the Divison for the Red Sox!

I have completely lost respect for Francona. He should have taken Gagne out right away. Even Remy and Orsillo are incredulous... Papelbon hasn't worked in 3 days. Papelbon would've put 'em away...

The Yankees were winning 7-0 at last check...

The Red Sox are screwed. Okijima has nothing left at this point in the season, Delcarmen is trick or treat and the other choices, besides Gag-Me are old Man Timlin, Cory or Snyder.

Gagne was supposed to bolster the pen but instead has given away 4 games for the Sox. Francona did make the mistake giving him too much of a leash but he needs someone to pitch the 8th and this is what they got him for. Frankly the experiment needs to be over. This performance was as disgusting as they get with his inability to throw a strike. One thing if they hit your pitches but to just walk in runs is completely unprofessional.

The Sox will go to the playoffs but as a WC team that backed in while falling apart. I predict they go out in the first round while winning but one game.
