STOCKBRIDGE, Georgia — Four men evading arrest for shoplifting at a neighborhood Wal-Mart triggered a small blast in the store using swimming pool chemicals in an incident that left four others hospitalized, authorities said.
Authorities said one of the men was seen by a store employee placing a toy inside his pants. As the employee went for help, the men headed to the section where the pool chemicals were stocked and mixed a chlorine-based chemical with another item, said Lt. Jason Bolton of the Henry County Police. The chemical reaction created a small explosion and filled the store with white smoke.
"They made their escape in the chaos that ensued," Bolton told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a Monday story. "It's just hard to believe they did something like this to shoplift something as insignificant as a toy."

Criminals aren't the smartest bunch in the world.
Shoplifters go from petty thieves to terrorists. What would have been a slap on the wrist now may bring a long prison term.

Getting weary reading these "freak out" statements from morons. They didn't do it for the toy, they did it so they wouldn't go to jail! Sheeesh!

I knew a feller once a long time ago that spilled a can of brake fluid in his garage and it ran down and got into the chlorine tablets that he had for the kiddie swinmming pool and burned the dang garage up.

One thousand shoppers and 100 employees had to leave the store temporarily.
They're like the McGuyvers of shoplifters.
Chlorine bleach and ammonia may react, ignite, or explode.
That durn John Edwards still won't wait his turn in line.
Sounds like they were smart enough to understand chemistry and apply it 'on the fly.' (mixed a chlorine-based chemical with another item) And smart enough to avoid capture.
They don't sound like the garden-variety thug.
Chemistry students or Islamic troublemakers, or both.
There are several things that can be mixed with Chlorine to make a bomb or and incendiary device. I won't say what they are because I don't want to be ripped for it, BUT these things can be found on the net easily enough. This does sound like more than a shoplifting incident to me though.
