The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

When Clare made her First Communion, I looked for a dress for her, and I swear, all the ones I found looked like a girl heading out for a Mardi Gras ball or something. They were all beaded and frou frou. I decided to make one for her and it was very plain; a sleeveless poly satin dress with a long sleeved georgette overlay. At the waistline, I put a simple row of Belgian lace with a thin band of french blue satin ribbon running through it. It was very simple and just lovely!

Global Warming, my @ss!! I've always picked up our dog's droppings 'cause we have a small yard, and I hate to look at it, or worse, step in it. This is the first time I can ever remember having to take a hoe and hack it out of the ice/snow mess. It is just an incredibly nasty winter!!!

I'm pondering that statement as I'm watching the snow drift down to cover the ice mass remaining in the frozen backyard....

It's been about 1 degree here for the past two days. Bring on the global warming!

A picture exists...I'm not sure if I have it or not. I'll have to check. ;-)

...More on the job stress subject...I feel like I'm caught in the middle because many of the end users don't like my boss on account of he tends to take his time on stuff that he doesn't see as important (like putting in a new keyboard in place of one that's sticking), and I don't, because I'm not as busy and because the user side of things is what I like best. Hence they want to bad mouth him whenever I come out to do anything, which makes me seriesly uncomfortable. On the one hand, I'm happy I'm able to help. On the other, I don't want to be the good guy to my boss' bad guy, and also sometimes he gets upset with me for not handling things as he would. *sigh*

That does sound very pretty. Kinda wish I knew how to sew! I've started to learn a few times, but don't have a sewing machine around any more. Not to mention material is expensive...which is too bad. It'd be nice to be able to make dresses that suit me better than the ones I can find in stores.

I bet craigslist has sewing machines...

I inherited my mom's old machine which I have so far used to make curtains of doooooom for the living room and nothing else. I do intend to do more. Once we've done the basement and there's room for the overflow from the spare room I can have it all set up and usable. Not sure I'd make dresses but, say, a heavy dog blanket they don't chew up right away would be nice.

My mom was a wonderful seamstress, but she couldn't teach me; I was clumsy-fingered and she was short-tempered so it just didn't work. I taught myself to sew one summer when I was away from home and bought a old, old Singer for $8 (tells you how long ago that was). I just made stuff and threw it away until I finally figured out how to sew.

I sewed for years but then gradually gave it up. I was totally amazed at the price of fabric when I thought about taking it up again. I think it is a combination of amount of clothing available now (thanks to free trade) and the speciality aspect of the finer fabrics now. I can remember, and this is really dating me now, when polyester burst on the fabric market, and it was very, very expensive for the time.

I don't think I've sewn much in the way of regular garments for myself or for the kids since sewing Clare's First Communion dress. I made a fancy vest for Paul for his Senior Prom, and can't remember any regular stuff since then.

Mostly in the last 10 years, I've sewn costumes for the kids; capes and tunics for LARPing, and cos-play things for Clare to wear to Anime conventions. In this area of the country, there are just too many outlet stores, and places like TJ Maxx to get clothing at prices good enough that it's not worth it to me to sew something similar.

I have a lovely sewing machine that I bought just after we moved here, but it's buried under stuff in the basement right now.

I learned to sew in Home-Ec in the 9th grade. My teacher loved me, because I'd actually READ the pattern instructions, and never had to bother her with questions.
