Geology Picture(s) of the Week, November 12-18, 2006: Etna (current), Stunning Haifoss (Iceland)
Etna Volcan Sicilien (Novembre 2006) ^ | November 2006 | Charles Rivere

1. I had not been paying attention to how active the Etna summit is again. "Etna Volcan Sicilien" covers it well (the link above to the November 2006 activity page has a 14-picture compilation). Two excerpts from it:

2. I accidentally discovered a picture of Haifoss, Iceland's 2nd highest waterfall. While the fall is nice, the view looking down the Thorjsa valley (headed by the waterfall) is amazing.

Fourpeaked volcano update: still steaming. Hard to imagine a volcano just waking up a tiny bit and being content to just steam for years... (especially because this one already had an opening "burp").

The view from behind that waterfall is great too. I spent five years in Iceland and this was one of our favorite places to visit.

Not only are these beautiful pictures, but there are no tourists, souvenir stands or admission booths. Here is Iceland's highest watefall, which is also Europe's.

The Iceland Valley is a continuation of the mid-Atlantic rift, isn't it?

Iceland is actually formed by a hot spot parked amidsts the mid-Atlantic rift.

This particular valley is erosional.

Go to this page:

Image Index for Class

Click on "Mid-Atlantic Rift at Tingviller_Iceland". Great shot (too big to post). The map shows the MAR crosses Iceland

Below is a map locating Haifoss:

You can see that Haifoss is a little off the ridge line. It appears that Tingvellir/Thingvellir is just a quick trip from Reykavik. Another stop for my itinerary ;-(

Tingviller, if I remember correctly is only about an hour from Reykjavik. I the five years we lived there we saw a good part of the island. I hope to someday return and visit the country again. We did the touristy things, but had the most fun when we got off the path and got to meet the people. The Icelandic people are some of the friendliest and hospitable people I have ever met. Do yourself a favor and visit.

Do yourself a favor and visit.

Scheduled as one of my dream vacations (but it's a lot closer than New Zealand or Australia).

Probably something like that, but historically Etna's eruptions give humans a chance to get away.

Buildings, however, don't fare as well:
