Iceland is actually formed by a hot spot parked amidsts the mid-Atlantic rift.
This particular valley is erosional.

Below is a map locating Haifoss:

You can see that Haifoss is a little off the ridge line. It appears that Tingvellir/Thingvellir is just a quick trip from Reykavik. Another stop for my itinerary ;-(
