Two tombs carved out of rock were recently discovered at the Qal'eh Kuchak mound by the team of archaeologists working at the Jiroft ancient site. The team began the fifth phase of excavations of Jiroft, which is located in the Halil-Rud River cultural area, in late October. Due to their magnificent structure, the archaeologists believe they may be the tombs of kings who ruled the region. "The ancient inhabitants of the region constructed a place like an orthogonal room measuring 2.5x2.5 meters. The place has some stairs leading to two cave-like tombs," team director Yusef Majidzadeh told the Persian service of CHN on Saturday... Since 2002, four excavation seasons have been carried out at the Jiroft site under the supervision of Majidzadeh, leading to the discovery of a ziggurat made of more than four million mud bricks dating back to about 2200 BC... A number of Iranian and foreign experts see the findings in Jiroft as signs of a civilization as great as Sumer and ancient Mesopotamia. Majidzadeh believes that Jiroft is the ancient city of Aratta, which was described as a great civilization in a Sumerian clay inscription.

The discovery came while Jiroft's Regional Water Organization was digging a water canal next to a small fortress. Discovery of this grave which had already been looted in the ancient times resulted in identifying a unique and small cemetery. What makes this cemetery different compared to the other ones which have been discovered so far is the unique burial method implemented in it, so that the corpses were buried under a hard layer of lime. The burial gifts inside the graves indicate that the cemetery must have belonged to people from the higher stratum of the society," said Nader Soleimani, archeologist from the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Kerman province during the Art and Archeology Symposium which was held by Iran's Academy of Art, supported by Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization.

Most interesting. Thank goodness this area isn't threatened by a dam.
I sometimes wonder what DaVinci could have done with a 10hp Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine.
:') He'd have had to invent gasoline, heh heh...
And welcome to the GGG list. I'll send the official welcome message in FReepmail after I get home, well, after I get home and sleep for a while. ;')
Well...
