If it makes us feel uncomfortable, that's fine. If it makes us think, even better.

Remember some on this same board crowed last season about the episode that seemed to make the peace movment out to be a bunch of dangerous buffooons.

I think it was just setting up the plot lines for this season.

I haven't heard Bush or Iraq mentioned yet.

It was, obviously but indirectly. During the debate between the Cylons 15-20 minutes in, the Dean Stockwell character notably used not only the phrase "hearts and minds" but also "It's not like they welcomed us with..." clearly meant to be ended with "open arms". Yeah, Dean Stockwell was playing the mouthpiece for the Bush policies there and it was pretty obviously intentional.

I will give them credit for showing both sides of the suicide bomber issue and the bottom line is that it's a poor Iraq analogy, even if the writers intend it to be one. Baltar wasn't elected with 100% of the vote like Saddam, nor was he posing any threat to the Cylons, nor was he throwing people into plastic shredders or raping their wives, sisters, and children. The "resistence" also isn't filled with foreigners like it is in Iraq, nor is there sectarian violence between the people from the different colonies, nor are there people who are really happy that the Cylons are there.

the populace will be justified in engaging in barbaric tactics seeing as how we operate that way.

According to Col Tigh. I wouldn't trust Tigh to bring me my coffee.

Also, the wimpy President Baltar, is going to get his due..

I was surprised at how much threat and force it took to get him to sign the execution order. Baltar of last season would have caved in an instant.

In any other time this story line would not matter but with the war on islamicism in the background I can't see this as anything but a hit job on the West.

Many people here on FR try to project the real world onto any piece of science fiction or fantasy. If you look back in FR threads you will find that FReepers were claiming that the Lord of the Rings movies described the conflict between the West and Islamic fascists. And they also claimed the third Star Wars movie was anti-Bush because of the Sith's absolutism vs the Jedi's relativism. Good grief! Heck, if I wanted I could say that Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, and Full Metal Jacket are all anti-Bush if I abstracted to the same degree as many FReepers commonly do.

Just because you can find similarities between this episode and the War on Terror doesn't mean that they exist. It is awfully easy to abstract something like this and perform a projection. For that reason you have to give it a very large benefit of the doubt by default.

When the Dean Stockwell Cylon was talkiong about instilling fear to convert humans, and executing them at random to make them fear the Cyclons, he could have said "Allah" and it would not have seemed out of place at all.

Why didn't you think of the Romans or even the Nazis? Perhaps you are projecting your thoughts about the War on Terror onto this piece of science fiction?

The fleet has been taught a lesson.

Hard and deep.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Definitely not the Romans - one of the reasons they did so well was their tolerance for just about any religion - they saw the value of bringing in other religions (and if you've visited Rome and seen some of the museums, etc., you'd realize they had a god for just about everything - probably had one for bowel movements). Nazis..comparison could be made.

My point was (and I didn't make it clearly, it's late), is that for every part of tonight's episode that somebody said represented Americans, one could easily say it reprented other countries/religions/etc..

The fact that we seem to be unable to agree says quite a bit about how good the writing was. I had very high expectations for tonight's episode and wasn't disappointed. I actually find myself saying I like Tigh's character. It's also easy to see once again that Olmos was the perfect choice for Admiral Adama.

I will be very surprised if she actually does bond with the little toaster.

The kid is only a half toaster. I guess that makes her a dutch oven.

And don't count Starbuck out, she's just getting into the skinjob's head.

I thought I was the only one who does that! I also watched a bunch of the webisodes while waiting for the first run of the show tonight.

A FAR better analogy is the Nazi occupation of France....

OR, The Soviet occupation of Western Poland and the Baltic states BEFORE 1941, when they carted away and executed the leadership/elites, when the people started resisting...

i noticed nobody posted a reply to yours, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I could not have said it better myself.

I must admit, at first I was seeing it as an anti-Iraq deal, but then I remembered the end of the 2nd season, when the Cylons marched down the street reminiscent of the Nazis marching through Paris. I then thought to myself, "wouldnt i be doing the same thing if the facists or islamofacists occupied America?"

what theyre really trying to show is that freedom is gainded at a great price, and many of our men have paid that price so that we can sit here and watch TV and be critical of it.

God Bless America.

So say we all. =P

You are talking about stories that were written years and years ago. BSG is now.

Recalling other movies that follow the basic Mahabarata story-line ~ where it's called the "war between good and evil".

Platoon was the most transparantly obvious since it was focused mostly on Arjana's "Celestial Journey".

I think these conflicts are called "archtypes".

The Revelations of John can also be stretched to track some of this, but I'm not getting into it beyond noting that the "Hildabeast" has come up out of the pit in her manifestation as "Baltar"

I did get that one right, right?!
