Hendrix Tops List Of Greatest Guitar Solos

Gilmour, Knopfler, Page Follow Rocker On List

POSTED: 2:58 pm EDT September 8, 2006
UPDATED: 3:45 pm EDT September 8, 2006

NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list

According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.

The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."

It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."

Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."

Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."

Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.

I always loved Joe Walsh's solo on "Closet Queen" from the James Gang Rides Again album. Kirk Hammet's solo on "Am I Evil" thrilled me as kid too.

As a guitar player, I go with:

Get the Funk Out - Extreme
Over the Mountain - Randy rhodes w/ Ozzy
Don't Take Me Alive - Steely Dan.

Either record is brilliant. Although, I'm not sure LTE will stun your beeber if you're looking for a lot of Levin.

Black Light Syndrome might be more of what you're after.
(Bozzio, Levin, Stevens)

Warren Haynes - My pick for still living and performing guitar wizard guy.. Of Allman Bros. fame but I prefer him with his own band, Gov't Mule.

Fn'A.The Mule's new CD High n Mighty is great.Especially Brand New Angel.Reminds me of Mountain's "Twin Peaks"live album.

Thanks for the review--I'm looking forward to the show. I usually end up being pleasantly surprised when I see guitar legends I'm not particularly in to. I saw Vai at a G3 concert, and although I'm not a big fan, he impressed me with his skill and professionalism (although anyone standing next to a drunken Yngwie Malmsteen looks professional!)

Mark Knopfler's soothing instrumental solo "Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)" is by far Mark at his best.

Over the Mountain - Randy rhodes w/ Ozzy

Rhodes is my all time favorite guitarist, I think his soloing on "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley" are unbeatable.  This guy just burned up the fretboard.

Ntresting trivia, didn't know that, Tull was great, still listen to him alot.

How come no one has mentioned Robin Trower or Rory Gallagher definitely these two would be among the top 100?

Part of my T-Lev collection. Tony's "World Diary" solo CD really opened my eyes, though I had been a big fan of his since his early Peter Gabriel days.

Mark

IMHO, it's Van Halen's "Eruption".

No lyrics - just guitar!

Rhoades' Crazy Train is most amazing for such a short piece.

That IS great, but I still think his work on "Sultans of Swing" is flawless and his best.

Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man".

Or Van Halen's "5150", which is also the title of the album of the same name. Or Rush "2112 Overture/The Temples Of Syrinx", the first half of which is a rock version of the 1812 Overture.

It sounds like he never stops playing, at full speed, from the moment the tune starts until it ends ... tremendous work.
