Hendrix Tops List Of Greatest Guitar Solos

Gilmour, Knopfler, Page Follow Rocker On List

POSTED: 2:58 pm EDT September 8, 2006
UPDATED: 3:45 pm EDT September 8, 2006

NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list

According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.

The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."

It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."

Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."

Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."

Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.

I also like Eddie Van Halen solos from the first 3 or 4 albums. After that, I think Eddie was just mailing it in.

You are right.  I remember seeing an article with him in "Guitar Player" where he said he wanted a more "mature" style to his playing.  Unfortunately, unlike Clapton, Eddie's mature approach was boring ... but man, he was great until after 1984.

If you're into Hendrix go read "Electric Ladyland"- a long and pretty objective biography.

Hendrix and his body guards used to beat white women who didn't find him attractive with bricks.

Clapton? Leslie West said he still needs practice.

What about Alvin Lee? Year 3000 Blues has the fastest guitar ever recorded.

Its hard to hear in the background - sounds like an American Steel Guitar.

Agree on "Light My Fire." Also, the lead guitar solo on "Turn Up the Radio" by Autograph is almost perfect.

I never got into Satriani, but my brother, also a guitar player, thinks he is the greatest.

Stevie Ray Vaughn didn't make the Top Ten??!!

Say what??!!

This list of examples reads more like a Top 40 list than a true Great Guitar Riffs list. Stairway to Heaven is the most overplayed Led Zep song ever, and is far from the best of Jimmy Page's guitar work...same goes with "Comfortably Numb".

IMHO, Pink Floyd's "Animals" has a much better selection of David Gilmour's best guitar work as compared to anything from "The Wall". But "Animals" never got the attention that "The Wall" did, either.

And to try to pin down Mark Knopfler's guitar work to one song from Dire Strait's first album is also short sighted because it ignores his later solo work, and collaborations with people like Chet Atkins.

Polls, shmolls!

I thought I was the only one who liked that solo.  Most people think it's an "eruption" rip off, but I always thought it was really good and clean.

Frank Zappa was a better player than either Hendrix or Clapton.

That guy was an awesome player. The band had a weak drummer and an ugly lead singer---two no-nos for 80s power rock.

Warren Haynes - My pick for still living and performing guitar wizard guy.. Of Allman Bros. fame but I prefer him with his own band, Gov't Mule.

I'm listening to to him as I read this thread! He was in-town a few months ago. He was the best I've ever heard him. I've been listening since 198x.

Didin't Gene Simmons discover them?  I thought they were going to go far, but didn't.

I agree he was a great player with a so-so band.  Kind of like Neal Schon with journey ... what a waste.

Petrucci: Anything with Liquid Tension Experiment

I've really got to pick up something by them, as I'm a HUGH Tony Levin fan, and I can't believe that I don't have anything by them in my collection.

My 19yr old son and I saw a documentary on Hendrix a year or so ago on I think discovery channel. When Hendrix was sober was the most amazing guitar player I have ever seen or heard. I'm 52 and knew he was good, but they showed him playing with his TEETH that was better than most players could do with their hands!
