Hendrix Tops List Of Greatest Guitar Solos

Gilmour, Knopfler, Page Follow Rocker On List

POSTED: 2:58 pm EDT September 8, 2006
UPDATED: 3:45 pm EDT September 8, 2006

NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list

According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.

The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."

It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."

Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."

Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."

Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.

I saw JH in concert back in '69. The crowd kept calling out for his old numbers, as he was playing some new stuff. After 15 or 20 minutes of this, he finally just got disgusted with the crowd and started playing the old songs they wanted to hear.

You could see and feel his disgust just before he cued the band for "Purple Haze" (or was it Watchtower? Too long ago to recall.)

Yep, Jimi's the man.  Amazing stuff he did on guitar, especially considering he didn't have the stuff that today's guitarists have to play with for special effects.

One of my favorite guitar solos, however, is on Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years".  Perfect, with no toys or effects.

I saw him in '70 at Temple Stadium in Philadelphia.

Hendrix, Steve Miller Band, The Grateful Dead, and Vanilla Fudge. A long day and evening.

I think tickets were $6.50

That is the first Hendrix album I got, back when I was a teenager (in the 1990s), after a saw a TV documentary on the making of that album. As much as I like "Are You Experienced" and "Axis: Bold as Love," "Electric Ladyland" is still my favorite.

Jeff Beck live is amazing. When he's on he blows all the others away . Again , each of these guitarist is looking to do something different and to that end these kids contest "who is better" is really a waste and not to be taken seriously.
Page live by the way has been sloppy to embarassing at different concerts.

I never got it. I far prefer Clapton.

Clapton is also one of the greats.I've read that in the 60's one could often see graffiti in London proclaiming that "Clapton Is God"...although I wouldn't go *that* far!

So many great guitarists came out of England in the 60's,Hendrix and Clapton being just two.

"Reelin' in the Years"
I believe that's Elliot Randal , a NYC guitarist on that track ..Yea , nice one. Iguess it should be judged by how the solo effected future solos and guitarist .Jimi realyy took the game to a new level. Eddy Van Halen moved it all ahead again years later. Eddys Eruption started a whole new movement in playing ( although I
ve seen a film of Les Paul doing th efinger tapping thing on the guitar neck , 1958 or so )

I like Eddie but think he "lost it" when he teamed up with Hagar.  Too toned down and predicatble, now his stuff when VH had Roth ... totally unrestrained and wild.
