NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list
According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.
The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."
It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."
Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."
Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."
Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."
Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.
I'll go along with that choice.
Yea , if you had to pick a guitar player for greatest solo Kimi be the one. His solo on the song Axis Bold As Love is up there too. Actually these polls are really dumb as so many guitarist have played great solos in so many differnt contexts .I can't believe Clapton solo on Crossroads ( Cream ,Wheels of Fire ) isn't right there . Most REAL guitarist know that is one of the best live guitar solos ever .
I liked Hendrix a lot---saw him live, twice---but I don't think any single solo he ever played compares to Clapton's PERFECT solo in "Crossroads" on the live album.
I saw him again about a year later, where "Vanilla Fudge" opened for him, and I have to say, they blew him off the stage. He was drugged out, couldn't tune his guitar, and was incredibly sloppy, both in playing and singing. "Fudge," on the other hand, were at the absolute top of their game.
Kini=Jimi sorry literally just work up and saw Jimi 's name on FR woo hooo//OK getting coffee and will return
Anything in there about Chris Spedding?
I saw and heard Jimmy Page play with the Yardbirds once before he started Led Zepplin. When I heard him play, I said to a friend, "listen to the guitar player, he's really good". Same thing for when I saw Jeff Beck before he was famous.
It was readily apparent.
I first saw one particular Jimi Hendrix album and thought the title was
Electric Land Lady....
go figure....
and IMHO Stairway to Heaven is the most overrated Zeppelin tune.....I prefer "Baby Im Gonna Leave You" for their definitive Rock Ballad.
I would agree with you totally. The absence of Clapton is, shall we say, egregious. I do love Hendrix, but Sir Eric is amazing.
I've always been partial to Brian May's 'Brighton Rock' performed live.
Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man".
Jeff Beck's coming to town, and I think I'll attend his show. I've never been a fan; actually, I don't know his music that well, but I thought it would be good to see a guitar legend before it's too late.
"All Along The Watchtower"...perhaps the greatest R&R song ever.Written by Dylan.performed by Hendrix. What more do you need to know?

My vote goes to Ritchie Blackmore's solo in Child in Time.
I never got it. I far prefer Clapton.
Wondering if we'll see any of Bill Nelson's (Be Bop Deluxe) solos on the list.
Jeff Beck playing on Cause We've Ended as Lovers", is concidered by many many many pro guitarist and one of the all around BEST solos on record. If you never listened to it check it out .Raw emotion and tons of style.
