The Hobbit Hole XXX - Then world behind and home ahead...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 06/28/2006 10:14:11 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Then world behind and home ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, depending on the wind - we may not shoot anything off tonight.

We will get to watch the other shores though! It's getting chilly out there!

Huh - we had a little thunderstorm earlier... just grazed by us though, and we didn't get nearly enough rain from it.

We got a bit of the same here. A bit of rain, some thunder in the distance but it blew thru quickly.

The stream bed looks fantastic! Paul has moved dirt for the last two days, and we have most of the back yard almost leveled out. We were thinking of putting in a waterfall or pond, but are not sure it would increase the value of the house, so we may just put in some nice stone steps at the level change, and put ground cover on the rest of the 'walls'. The yard at the NE corner of the house is about 5' higher than the corner on the other end, and there used to be a long hill down to the back of the yard with a swale in the center, providing drainage away from the basement door, going up to another hill to the other corner. We flattened it out by filling in the swale, but at the high side, there is a good sized drop off that we're filling in to make a less steep slope, and we'll put ground cover on that. That's where we'll put the stone stairs.

When we dug the hole for the addition we had thought we'd do, we found a HUGH rock a few feet under the dirt. In order to get it out, we hacked at it with the shovel of the front loader and then a jackhammer. It split into 6 almost perfect slabs, each about 5" thick, 30"deep and about 5' long. They'll make absolutely perfect steps down from the high level to the lower one. Having the flat area a the bottom makes it better for playing and mowing. SirKit will install a drain and pipe to take the water that will fall by the basement door, which will be at a slightly lower level, down to the back of the property

How were the animals last night? Hopefully the craziness will be over now.

Yawn... morning... ugly gray rainy day here. Oh well, it's Wednesday even if it feels like Monday.

Have fun at KD.... at least go in time to watch the fireworks :~D

zzzzzz...i'mup...i'mup...

It was already too late for the KD fireworks before I left. Got home around 2:00 a.m.

Jr. tried to change the tire, but one of the lug nuts was damaged and it wouldn't budge with the wrench that came with the car. Was able to offer the "this is why we got you a Triple A card" lesson.

Thought we'd have to have it towed (which would have been spendy), but the driver was able to use a different lug wrench and get it loose.

If I weren't so behind at work, I'd go back to bed.

We survived the 4th... There was a lot of distant noise, a remarkable amount, really, but not a lot close... nothing at the store, nothing from my direct neighbors.... not too bad. The horses did fine, Homer was still not out with three pills, but he wasn't panicked.

It's all a part of raisin' younguns. He's getting three new tires, an alignment and an oil change today. I'm getting his next paycheck. ;-)

Sam's reaction to the fireworks was interesting. I don't recall him ever being that way before. 'Course there's a good possibility that we've just always been gone and never knew he was freakin' out.

Sam has my sympathies! Was he wanting to hide, or bark at it?

I tell ya, AAA is the best!

We just added Jr. on with his own card. And, I think based on the tow truck driver's recommendation we're going to upgrade to AAA plus. That would give up to 100 miles in towing. It would've been about $100 to tow last night.

Jr's got a car, which is more than I had at that age. But it really is a piece of crap vehicle. I'd forgotten how much I hated it it until I drove it last night.

It's a great thing...Steve scoffed at me when I got it, but he was the one that ended up actually needing it. His truck had a flat on the river road late one night on the way home from school. No street lights, it was pitch black. No shoulder. He couldn't get his jack to work right for some reason, because of the dirt. Maybe it was sinking in the dirt or something...can't remember. He ended up calling AAA and even commented to the AAA guy that he had scoffed at me when I got it.

:-)

With one call, AAA pays for it's self, imo.

Mostly wanting to growl and bark. He stayed ~very~ close to us. Fortunately, they didn't last long. It was just some naybers setting off a few in their yards.

'Course one set of idiots was setting off firecrackers from their deck. You've seen the pictures of our back yard with all the trees. They were probably too drunk to realize the could've set the whole woods on fire.

Mornin'. ~sip~

Couldn't agree more on AAA. I've had it forever and it's paid for itself each and every year, in one form or another. The discounts are pretty good too!

Hair - glad to hear last night wasn't as bad as prior years. Hopefully, they don't have anything left for tonight. :-)

We had a wonderful time last night. It was the very first Fourth that required me and the girls to bundle up though! It was downright chilly out there!
