The Hobbit Hole XXX - Then world behind and home ahead...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Then world behind and home ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Three days before my wedding, I was sitting in my office hand sewing the lace capelet that went over my basic scoop neck, a-line sleeveless sheath. My boss walked in, looked at me and asked, "Is that your wedding dress?" Then he just shook his head in amazement.

I actually threw the dress in the washing machine the night before the wedding. It was polyester; VEY 70's. Looking back, I must have been out of my mind to do that. The fabric was fine to wash, but anything could have happened to it, and by then it was too late to do anything else. Oh well. I guess I like living on the edge. ;o)

Heh, this is why I am leaving Mom in charge of wedding garb. I will handle the programs, the drinks, interacting with the vendors, logistical support... just don't ask me to sew my own veil!

Hurrah! I'm so glad you're coming. Even though we probably won't have a chance to say more than hi. I'm thrilled that any of the Hobbit Hole can make it. Hopefully more of us can make Ruthy's wedding :-D

Where are you staying?

Heh, I didn't wear a veil, just flowers in my hair. Did I mention it was the 70's ? ;o) I made my own dress, and it cost me a whopping $35. My bouquet cost exactly $1 more. Well, it WAS 31 years ago, after all.

Ah, yeah, I know where that is. A friend of mine back when I was at the local community college, worked there. Wonder what became of him...

Right, that's nice and convenient to the Turnpike for your drive the next day, you just take 30 back to 119 and then taken 119 past the Turnpike to New Stanton.

My dress is costing about $200. And at least half of that is for the decorative beaded lace. Those bridal places charge SUCH ridiculous markups. The worst is the veils, they charge $100 for what Mom says cost her $10 to make.

We have similar, um, issues in my family. Heh. Case in point. Hubby's family are New York Irish Catholics. One of hubby's nephews just graduated from Regent University's Law School - Pat Robertson's outfit. It was raining like cats and dogs leading up to the graduation. The nephew has an Italian-born Catholic grandmother who took it upon herself to not only stake out the best seats for the rest of us, but sit out there in the rain praying the Rosary. Sure enough, the clouds parted, the sun shone down and good ol' Pat took the podium and said, "Praise the Lord!" Oh it was priceless. The nerve of that man to take credit after all she went through. Heh. Holidays when the Irish and the Italians get together are especially entertaining.

In other news, my brother's family has increased by one. They delivered a health baby boy this afternoon. I'm an aunt again!
