Questions about San Antonio, Tx.
Posted on 06/22/2006 10:25:13 AM PDT by maineman
I've been given an opportunity to transfer to San Antonio, Tx. Can anyone suggest a nice area in or around San Antonio? I have 2 children so schools are important. Thanks so much.

I'd suggest Tampa, might be a long commute though.

The Alamo Heights School District is a good one as far as public schools are concerned. That would be my pick, hands down.

San Antonio Rose
Bob Wills
Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San Antone.
Where in dreams I live with a memory,
Beneath the stars, all alone.
Well it was there I found, beside the Alamo,
Enchantments strange as the blue up above.
For that moonlit pass, that only he would know,
Still hears my broken song of love.
Moon in all your splendor, known only to my heart,
Call back my rose, rose of San Antone.
Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart,
Speak once again of my love, my own.
Broken song, empty words I know,
Still live in my heart all alone.
For that moonlit pass by the Alamo,
And rose, my rose of San Antone.
Broken song, empty words I know,
Still live in my heart all alone.
For that moonlit pass by the Alamo.
And rose, my rose of San Antone.
And rose, my rose of San Antone.
And rose, my rose of San Antone.

I would suggest Boerne, Texas just west of San Antonio. It is a small town, quiet with nice parks and schools. Downtown San Antonio is only about 20-25 minutes away when it isn't rush hour.

San Marcos is a wonderful town, has a great culture, etc., but their public school district is pathetic.

One thing about Boerne, though. It is kind of a motorcycle crazy town. The surrounding countryside lends itself to good motorcycling so just about every other guy in Boerne rides. On the second weekend in Feburary, Boerne hosts the first big bike rally of the year, the St. Valentines Day Massacre. I live about 150 miles away, but I attend every year.

Ah that might be. I never observed the public schools. My main areas I hit were the bars where the girls hung , the beer store and the river lol

Yep, we lived in San Marcos for six years and put our kids in private school before moving down the road to New Braunfels because of their superior school districts.

For San Antonio proper, and a few of the other towns in Bexar county, the best two districts are Northside, and Northeast. Northeast is a more expensive area, in general, but the Northside school district is considered just as good. The state of Texas has their ratings, for whatever they might be worth, on line.

In general anything outside loop 410 and north of the I-10/US-90 line is fine, outside, or near loop 1604 is even better. Even the school districts to the far southeast aren't bad.
If you have any specific area, and thus specific schools, in mind, FReep mail me. My wife is chair of a teacher education program at a small college in Texas, so she has her own sources. She/we don't live in San Antonio, but we have in the past, and hope to retire there, and may move back before we retire. We will probably have custody of our great nieces now almost 8 and 6 1/2, so we are looking at school districts down there as well. (Our daughters have a JD and MA respectively and the MA is working on her PhD.
There's some good information on San Antonio linked at

Alamo Heights, very nice place. Good schools. I grew up on Normandy Street off Broadway.
