Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.

The Steelers confirmed the accident for Channel 4 Action News.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper.

Yeah, I had on a DOT/Snell full face helmet. I would never wear anything less on a motorcycle.

I crashed my mountain bike once and flipped over the handle bars. I was wearing a helmet and my head HIT A ROCK on the trail and broke the helmet.

It wasn't until I took off my helmet, that I realized I'd hit my head, I had no injuries to my head! Not even a headache.

Of course I did break my collarbone...

Helmets work

Well, he's an NFL quaterback after all. Probably thought nobody was allowed to hit him.

What a great line! And more than a hint of truth!

It is not INSANE to drive without a helmet.

Agreed, but it's extraordinarily STUPID and selfish. This man is likely to be dead by weeks end. Will your opinion change then? Remember, few people are as physically fit as this man was.

This is terrible news! I'm praying for him.

So very disappointed this news wasn't on the main Forum, bts..When I consider the vanities and other junk that stay up there, it pales by comparison to this..

Update at http://news.yahoo.com/s/wtae/20060612/lo_wtae/9356067

According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.

I still can't believe there are Dolphin fans besides me on this site.

I leave in Ontario but have been a Fin fan since about 1970.

I went to the Bill's/Dolphin's Game last year at Ralph Wilson in October and Miami almost pulled it out in the end ...

This year they play Buffalo in December ... brrrr .... but I am still going to go!

Good to see you are around. I hope the offence comes through and the defence continues to play tough and tackle well.

You may not get a severe head injury, but its good for a broken jaw and worse. So not only do you need a hemet, but one that protects the entire head (is that what you call full face?).

The full face helmets can be good for protecting your jaw, teeth, and pretty face, but they can also result in a snapped neck if they catch the wrong way. They also cut way down on your peripheral vision which is your first line of defense when street riding.

It's all a trade off. Bike riding is an inherently hazardous pastime as are numerous other activities. As someone old enough to be Big Ben's father, I am no longer inclined to get on a bike with or without a helmet, but when I was his age, I rode without a helmet and never thought twice about it. It was "great fun" back when I was invincible.

Severe injuries to the knees is not a good thing for a man of his size. Yikes.

I guess it's better than death, but severe injuries to his knees doesn't at all bode well for his football career. Now that we know he won't die, I admit I'm getting a bit p.o'ed at him.

Oh please. Since we don't know what happened, we don't know if he was driving too fast, drunk, or whether the other driver was at fault. As for selfish...NO IT WASN'T. He rode a motorcycle. BIG DEAL. Riding a motorcycle is not selfish. It's just something you do (or don't). As for the person who said riding is inherently unsafe, you don't know what you are talking about. You clearly don't ride. Riding is as safe as YOU want to make it. You can ride and be safe, or ride and be unsafe. What the heck do you folks think when you think of cyclists? Lunatics and Hell's Angels?

His career has been put in serious jeopardy due to the double knee injuries, and is at least on hold for a long painful rehab. This is a shame--I'm no Steelers fan but as a fan of the sport I recognize that Ben was one of the QBs of the future. Here's hoping he pulls thru and is able lead a full life, and also be able to play football again soon.

Actually, around these parts (Pittsburgh area) it's not safe to drive or ride in anything less than a tank. Even the smartest, most careful driver can be involved in a major accident. Has a lot to do with our krappy roads, goofy terrain and of course, the idiot drivers who have sprung up around here lately. If as has been reported, this accident did occur at 10th & Armstrong Tunnels -- I know that spot -- it's a lousy intersection. And we have had a number of motorcycle accidents around here lately -- kinda comes with the nice weather -- but there have been a rash of them -- some of them fatal. If he comes out of this alive, he will be lucky.

Someone who was paid $9 million upfront to be the leader of a team is extremely selfish to risk this type of injury by riding a motorcycle.

As for it being "inherently unsafe" compare and contrast the list of Ben's injuries with those of the woman with whom he collided. They were both in the same accident. She has no known injuries, and he has his head and knees in shambles.

Why?

Because motorcycles lose when they collide with cars. Therefore, they are unsafe. It may not matter much when the average Joe rides his bike and ends up using his face as a battering ram, but when a highly-paid professional athlete allows himself to be in this situation, it is selfish and foolish and disrespectful.
