WASHINGTON, May 31 — After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.

Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

IDJUT:
You don't stop a terrorist as he is proceeding to push the button, as he stands at the base of the Empire State Building, with a nuke in his luggage. That's too late. If NY wants to be protected, then bucks have to be spent BEfORE the terrorist ever gets there. THAT is Homeland Security.
Case closed.

The net effect was that the grant to New York City, which was $207.6 million last year, will drop to $124.5 million this year

What exactly are they spending $207.6 million per year on??

Rush was brilliant today

So New York, you're anti war yet you still want government protection from terror?

That is brilliant.

"Attacking NYC would accomplish many of their goals, attacking Omaha NE (which im sure is a very nice little city) would have a miminal effect."

Minimal effect? Have you not noticed the gigantic effect that just under 3,000 deaths on September 11, 2001 in New York had on this country? Terrorists could easily kill that many people in Omaha, Nebraska and Louisville, Kentucky.

New York gets about $2 per person in anti-terrorism funds. North Dakota gets about $17 per person. Meanwhile, if Islamic radicals are planning an attack on NDak or Omaha, there is a good chance that they have connections to established cells in New York City. If that is the case, it is likely that the plot will be uncovered by the New York Police Department before either the FBI or the local authorities get wind of it. New York City taxpayers pay for a well organized anti-terrorism police operation that includes undercover agents, fluent translaters, etc.

Believe me, we would rejoice if our tax dollars and efforts resulted in saving lives and property anywhere in the nation. Unlike some posters on this thread, we haven't forgotten that we are all in this together.

Lived in NYC area most of my life, now live in the sticks (in NC). Worked in Jersey City on 9/11/01 and stood at the window of our office building watching North Tower burn when 2nd plane came in from our right and pierced the South Tower. Spent the next weeks...months driving to and from work/stores/schools etc. seeing extra police units deployed in malls, on street corners, responding to this "apparent" threat or that "reported" incident. Watched local television news report nightly about police investigating possible terror links (NJ/NY Port Authority Police, local NJ police departments, FBI, NYC Police, etc.) Office buildings all around Manhattan, the tunnels and bridges, the sports arenas, the airports, the ports, all received a lot of added attention/protection/scrutiny.
Lived in the Northeast most of my life. Worked there. Got married there. My wife had our 3 children there. We knew several people who were fortunate enough to not make it in to work (at the WTC) that day. My family lives there. Most of the people I call friends live there. Many individuals I have worked with live there. Some of them are liberal, some are conservative. On 9/11 this did not matter.
There's a lot of Blue State vs. Red State all over this thread..."NYC can go drop" "Bush go to..." "Screw the Northeast..." "The Hicks and sticks don't matter as much as we do" If there is another attack in NYC, are YOU going to smile (just a little)? If the Mid-West is the target, is that going to make you say, "Now, how do YOU like it?" If Texas is next, will the North breathe a sigh of relief? If it's LA will anyone be happy?

Heck no! We'll probably remember how we felt on 9/11, get our minds right (again) and hopefully rally together and unite as ONE people.

But for now, let's just misspend money, argue about pork, and get back to doing what we do best--bicker among ourselves while our enemy readies himself.

Sorry for the rant...like I said, I have a lot of family and friends up in the NYC area...some of them are liberal...and some of them are conservative...

No, not really. You guys only own part of Ellis Island, where the state line passes through it. Now how about maintaining your part of it?

Actually, New York seems to be doing a far better job of prosecuting terrorists and putting them in jail (the 1993 bombers of the WTC, the terrorists who plotted in 1995 to blow up the UN and the tunnels, the terrorists who bombed the embassies in Africa in 1998, and most recently the subway bomber) than the Feds (who seem to f*k up everything):

I think New York would do far better to tell Homeland Security to keep its money and butt out (and leave the NYPD alone).

The whole rest of the nation is a "weak link" outside of the main targets. Does it make sense to protect every part of it the way we protect the targets? The terrorists don't want to be laughed at for evaporating a Wal-Mart in Omaha.

Don't make fun of the tears that will be shed if our whole economy goes kaput after New York is attacked.
