WASHINGTON, May 31 — After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.

Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

"Wow. An open 3+ hour patch in the thread... "

So, what'cha gonna do with it?

I could have written a half-dozen bad poems.

Or not.

I could have written a half-dozen bad poems.

Or a dozen half bad poems.

Come to think of it I have never seen a bad poem from you.

Is it hard to write deliberately bad poetry?

I have one. It's called, "Bob's Bad Poem."

I'm sure you've seen it.

Okay, the suspense is killing me.

Bob’s Bad Poem

Someone said my poems,
Were all so very good,
I couldn’t write a bad one so,
I guess I thought I should.

I’ll start by saying orange,
That doesn’t rhyme with squat.
So if you speak of oranges,
A poet you are not!

Another thing I hate to see,
Is words that don’t quite rhyme,
So if you happen on such things,
You’ll know they aren’t mine.

And meter is important too,
The rhythm of the pome,
I try to keep mine steady on,
And not wandering too very far from home.

The essence of a poem,
At least where I’m concerned.
Is that you have a point to make,
Not clever phrases turned.

Anyone can write a poem,
Free verse is free-for-all,
But it takes art to have them shown,
Somewhere other than a wall.

There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good, she was very, very good.
But when she was bad........
She got a fur coat, jewels, a waterfront condo, and a sports car.

Like coolsville Daddy-o

(I have no idea what that means. I think I heard it in a movie once)

But that is a good bad poem. Instructional.

Thank you.

Back to your original question:

"Is it hard to write deliberately bad poetry?"

It is for me. It's like saying "Busketti" instead of Spaghetti, or "He gots" instead of "He's got." It's not something I care to do for fear that I will unintentionally develop a habit.

Besides, there's no dearth of bad poetry. I see it all the time.

"I wish I was that bad..."

Are you kidding? You cleaned me out, and then you left with no forwarding address.

If you want to come along when we raid Iceland we can get you some fish products.

Maybe a fur coat. Surely Iceland has furs.

Thanks you. I now have confirmation from a second expert that writing deliberately bad poetry is hard for a good poet to do.

I will credit you in the footnotes. :)

I have been single longer than I was ever married (combined) so I have no clue how that works. Good for you, though!

(At least I know it works for SOME people!)

I don't do fish, but I like furs! Lots of furs from different animals. I like things natural....

By now the stuff almost writes itself.

I have to be careful that I don't lapse into iambic in ordinary conversation.

That's why I try to key it around an idea. Most of my stuff has some kind of a point to illustrate, sometimes more than one.

I seldom craft something that doesn't have at least one hidden message. It's my way of getting people to read my words closely.

Then, to avoid being hoist by my petard, I have to scrutinize what everyone else writes. That's why I pounce on typos and such.

Eventually, when I run out of rhymes, I'll become an editor.

No poem, but the story has been written. Not my story, but one I read in a compendium published in the thirties, I think.

I don't have access to that book right now. Would you like a poem?
