WASHINGTON, May 31 After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.
Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

Some places, yeah.
You note I said I work in SV; I don't LIVE there.
My house is $300,000 (read: 50 miles) from here in a more reasonably-priced community.

I'm a penny pincher, too!
To: stephenjohnbanker
That's equal to a bit over 30 miles if you commute in the Los Angeles area.
I had a job in Long Beach, once, just across the 405 from Wilmington; ballpark 30 miles. I drove from Anaheim and it took longer to do that commute than it takes to do this one, and that was over 15 years ago; it's worse there now.

Hello, Profette Dr. Tulip Tree the 76th!! Thanks for helping me find my way back to the Undead Thread.
Bad times here. Central hallway temp is 81F (gasp, I'm dying -- sorry, Monkey Face!) and it gets worse outside the next two days, visitor arrives tomorrow -- if she's well enough to fly (temp 102+ today), I won't talk about the job... ... ... ..and all things considered, put in perspective, life's pretty darn good overall if I think about it for a bit.
Amen.

Uh, yeah. More like two hours these days. The 57 can come to a standstill for ten or fifteen minutes at a time--and that's outside of peak rush hour!

Oh, you're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
To: HKMk23
Sounds okay the way you describe it. I commuted from the beach in Ventura to Wilshire Bl. 5 days a week for 12 years. Up at 5, out by 5:30, in the office at 6:30- 7 am.

It's so nice to enjoy the cool of the evening.

Ick! I prefer temps in the 70s. It was really hot last weekend - around 100 degrees. Luckily it rained the past couple of days and cooled everything off.
