WASHINGTON, May 31 After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.
Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

Yup. We've been having low 100's w/ a heat index of 108. Couple years ago we had a week of so of 114 degrees. Your eyes melt :(

[Gordon Lightfoot in the background]
"With a load of iron oars 20,000 tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty..." I remember looking up the words of that song for a friends one time, that's the ship that sunk in on of the Great Lakes, right?
I love Gordon Lightfoot's stuff!

Now, see, THAT'S what I call "too hot"; when you have heat plus humidity. Out in the California deserts it can top 115, but it's dry enough that it's tolerable, and it cools off when the sun goes down. You toss in 80%+ humidity and tolerable is out the window. And you can just about forget the part about cooling off; it'll swelter all night long with the moisture in the air retaining the heat.

Yeah, that's something like I figured - I think the thing with humidity is, evapouration is a lot slower, thus sweating won't cool you down.

Yep.
The Great Lakes are really just fresh water seas with rip currents and the whole bit. If you ever get over this way drop me a line and I will show you around. It's some of the prettiest land on earth.

Doesn't lend itself to epic poetry cycles... It could years ago, when it was the only way to survive, today - fishermen, like farmers, are subsidised, or/and have also 'landlubber' jobs, so there isn't even the drudgery to write about!!

Fans aren't very effective with humidity, either - I dunno about those A/Cs, though.

The link I posted in 3951 has detailed notes on the werck of the Edmund Fitzgerals that include some interesting points about Lake Superior that I hadn't thought about before.
