WASHINGTON, May 31 After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.
Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

That is an interesting thread. I Kings 18 came to mind.

...common sense and TACT.
Ooooh, boy. Tact. That's a toughie.
I observe that there is much involved in comunication that takes tact out of the hands of the author. More so than in speech, tact, in print, bears very much upon the reader; their mindframe, predelicitons, preconceptions of the author, whether they agree or disagree... Arguably, with a reader of sufficiently contrary nature, no author has a chance of conveying an idea with "tact". This is not to say that the effort ought not be made, only that, despite your dilligence, there will be times when a reader defeats all your efforts at tact, and you find yourself assailed in spite of your best intentions.

Yeah, I noticed. The part you italicized in your post is what made me think of Elijah's taunting in I Kings 18.

And really, the more that I look at it, I see the escalating situation in the Mideast as symptomatic not so much of "extremists," but Islam unveiled. You mentioned reading "The Hobbit" to your kids, so you may have already done "The Chronicles of Narnia"--something I highly recommend. The last book in the series, aptly titled, "The Last Battle," is a paraphrase of St. John's Revelation. It's interesting that Lewis alludes to Islam (the religion of Tash), Allah (Tash), and Muslims (the Calormenes). My point is that, in the "The Last Battle," once the Calormenes dropped the "Aslan and Tash are one"--IOW, Jehovah and Allah are the same--lie, they were exposed and made no bones about it: I think that's what we're seeing today.

BTW: Thanks for the heads-up on the Return of GE. Doesn't seem like he learned anything while he was away. Come to think of it, I don't even know how long he was away; could'a been a weekend, for all I know.
He's back now, though, and (over)compensating as much as ever.
There was a website about two years ago that was embedded in a WAV file. If you played the WAV, MediaPlayer would tell you "Acquiring Licenses" for as long as you let it keep going. Nothing ever played, but the entire time you were being told "Acquiring Licenses" the embedded website was being accessed and dumping, and activating, malware all over your hard drive. The site's gone; ISP shut it down. Wish I could find another to "proof" some peoples' claims to invulnerability.
Our IT staff isolated that WAV it on a laptop that was in line to be wiped and reimaged. They let it run for five minutes before they yanked the network cable. It would not reboot. They booted it using a diagnostic CD, and found nearly 500 instances of spyware, viruses, worms and other assorted nastygrams.
This was done on a bigtime corporate LAN, behind the firewall, running the latest and greatest McAffee Virus Scan Enterprise with up-to-date DAT files. In spite of all that, it was totally OWNED in seconds.

That's an excellent analogy; prescient on the part of Lewis.
Prophetic, even.
My "I don't KNOW, but I THINK" file contains this notation:
The Antichrist -- not some dimestore phony, but the real deal -- will be Muslim.
Consider these concepts:
Isaac v. Ishmael and their Descendants in Confilct: Christ v. Antichrist
The Unmasking of Allah: From Allah=YHWH to Allah<>YHWH

Yes, we are not dealing with a blond haired Romanian named Nicolae Carpathia as the cult novels would suggest. In fact, St. Paul, perhaps unwittingly but under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, did mention "another gospel" preached by an angel. Of course, Paul was using hyperbole, but it is striking in light of the claims of Islam that the Qur'an was originally given to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel.
Consider these concepts: Isaac v. Ishmael and their Descendants in Confilct: Christ v. Antichrist
The fallacy on the part of many American evangelicals is thinking that the Jews currently inhabiting Israel are the true descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Israel has become quite secular and atheistic these days--much like America and American Jews--such that the word "Jew" has lost a good deal of its original meaning. Notwithstanding, I do see the conflict between the God-appointed son of Abraham and the illegitimate one, and how it has played out in the divide between grace-based Christianity and works-based Islam.

Wasn't there "another gospel" given to Joseph Smtih by an angel, as well?
I'm not deep into LDS history.

The bible truly speaks that "not all who are of Israel are Israel", in concert with st. Paul in Romans 2, that he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, that is in the flesh, but inwardly, in the spirit. So all who are spiritual Israel are Israel and in conflict with the "sons of the slave woman."
Hoo-boy. Time to "clock out".
Carry on.

Right now about 60, slightly humid (by feel), but that'll go away as it warms up. Forecast says partly sunny & high of 70. Not too bad.

Morning, Sion.
Thank God we have all those nuclear rockets. The thread is really moving along at breakneck speed now!
Maryland is getting ready to move into its Summer doldrums, where the only energetic people you see are those rushing from one air-conditioned spot to another.
