WASHINGTON, May 31 After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.
Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

Okay, Undead! A question I'm sure you can answer.
In the runup to the establishment of the national Shogunate in Japan, there were three major contenders: Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the Third Guy. Who was the Third Guy?
I expect you have this on the front burner, KP, so please help, it's keeping me awake at night!
For bonus points, what's the Kurosawa movie based on "King Lear," and is that the same one as the one that covers the decisive battle in the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, or what?
Blessing your hearts in advance! Please ping your FRiends if necessary.

Der Prinz says that Kurosawa's version of King Lear is "Ran," and that sounds right to me. So what's the film with the battle between Tokugawa and Toyotome?

um.
dunno who the third guy was.
the Kurosawa movie was "Ran" and it was fictitious, though the final battle scene probably dew heavily upon the record of the battle of Sekigahara.

I don't know, FRiend. I was born and raised in SoCal, myself. I left in 1973, and visited religiously, every ten years or so, until my mom died. Now, I ain't NEVER going back. Well, maybe if the conservative population of the state ever exceeds 51%...

It has been two decades since I studied Japanese history so I am shocked that I remembered it.
If this is for your kids you might include that Hideyoshi had three thumbs, two on his right hand and one on his left.
I have NO idea why I remember that.

Oda Nobunaga was prior to the rise of the Tokugawa.
Oda Nobunaga was basically Ieyasu Tokugawa's and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's boss.

It's been almost that long since I took a class in Japanese history (taught by a Korean, which made it rather personal.)
The offspring have expressed an interest in "King Lear" the play, which leads to the movie (with Laurence Olivier or Patrick Stewart, depending on what's in the library) and then to "Ran."
We've also got an interest in "Apocalypse Now," which requires studying "Heart of Darkness" first. Should be an interesting couple of months!

I don't think sheep are an issue in Japan. I recall coming across a version of Psalm 23, translated into Japanese for a non-sheepherding culture. It was very interesting!
