For bonus points, what's the Kurosawa movie based on "King Lear," and is that the same one as the one that covers the decisive battle in the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, or what?

the Kurosawa movie was "Ran" and it was fictitious, though the final battle scene probably dew heavily upon the record of the battle of Sekigahara.

It has been two decades since I studied Japanese history so I am shocked that I remembered it.

If this is for your kids you might include that Hideyoshi had three thumbs, two on his right hand and one on his left.

I have NO idea why I remember that.

Oda Nobunaga was basically Ieyasu Tokugawa's and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's boss.

It's been almost that long since I took a class in Japanese history (taught by a Korean, which made it rather personal.)

The offspring have expressed an interest in "King Lear" the play, which leads to the movie (with Laurence Olivier or Patrick Stewart, depending on what's in the library) and then to "Ran."

We've also got an interest in "Apocalypse Now," which requires studying "Heart of Darkness" first. Should be an interesting couple of months!

I don't think sheep are an issue in Japan. I recall coming across a version of Psalm 23, translated into Japanese for a non-sheepherding culture. It was very interesting!
