Many people asking me, "Rush, so what did you think of the finale of 24?"

I waited--I didn't mean to wait this long. But I waited a while because some people record it and Tivo it ...

(To Snerdley) You haven't watched the finale? ... Okay ...

Well, I'm going to go ahead--Snerdly hasn't seen the finale yet, but enough time has gone by now that if you haven't seen it it's not my problem. It's yours.

I loved it! Folks, I think this is the best season yet. I tell you something, 24 is interesting. Most series like this--any series--their fifth season, their ratings are generally starting to trend downward. But this is their highest rated season yet at 24. Every episode to me was ... there wasn't one wasted episode, wasn't one wasted moment. And I thought the finale was just superb.

But I was disappointed. I didn't like the last three minutes of the final episode. I didn't like the Chinese--the ChiComs--coming back and capturing Jack and putting him on a freighter heading back to Shanghai because I know, I just know ... and I haven't talked to Surnow or any of the 24 guys about this. But I just know that the Chinese are not going to be part of next year's series. I know for a fact that Jack Bauer can not be in China when the first episode airs. And you want to know why? Because the show is 24! 24 hours. Each episode is one hour of a 24 hour day. Do you know how long it takes to fly back from China to the United States? Sixteen hours! I know damn well that they're not going to have Jack Bauer on an airplane for 16 hours, 16 episodes, of 24 next year. So I know that something's going to happen--he's going to get off of that slow boat to China before he gets there. I have no clue what's going to happen ...

I had visceral desires. I wanted this wacko president to suffer public humiliation over what he had done. That didn't happen. I wanted this shadow government explained. Who are these clowns talking to the president throughout the last five or six episodes, who are these guys? I thought there would be some tie-in at least referenced. I know why there wasn't: It's because all of that is going to be explained next year.

The character of President Logan--Gregory Itzin is the actor. Big presence this year. So he's going to be on the series next season. And we don't know--it could well be that by the time the series starts next January the writers could have found a way for him to get out of any trouble he's in and still be president. So who knows what's going to happen. I'm not sure that they even know what they are going to do with him yet.

But I thought it was fabulous! I just didn't like the Chinese bit. Here's Jack--after saving the day!--and there's a phone call at some remote location where he saved the day, some dock somewhere, that his daughter's on the phone! How did she know the number of this place??

But anyway, that doesn't detract. In fact, it probably just sets up the next season and builds curiosity even more.

The terrorists next season are going to be more conventional. The terrorists this year started off as "separatists from a breakaway republic"--ie, Chechens. They weren't allowed to say that though--had to be politically correct. But I think there will be more conventional terrorists in next season. Season six coming up of 24.

End.

When I heard him say that today, I thought that that was an interesting observation. The best part about 24 is that you don't know what they're going to do next. That's what makes it interesting.

Sutherland signed a new contract, but it was to be associated with 24, not necessarily starring in it.

I wonder whether next season introduces a new hero who either helps to rescue Jack or takes on some other scenario. This could leave, until an even later season, the rescue or escape of Jack from China.

I fully agree that 24's wimpy and weasely president was like Kerry. As I watched, that was my thought: thank Heaven Kerry wasn't elected, or this is what we'd have. But Kerry's "wife" didn't have 1/100th the class of the 24 First Lady.

I waited--I waited for my ever superior opinion to be required by the lesser beings...

I'll go polish my Rush shrine now.

Rush made a good point there, but what if Jack is in China for the whole "day" next season--with Chloe and Audrey searching for him? That could be interesting too. But I think Rush is right. Jack will get off the boat and return to LA.

Hmmm, or that could be the plot of the 24 movie ...

It's Jack Bauer -- couldn't he just ride in an ICBM?

Rush needs more imagination -- there are plenty of ways they could do what he says is "impossible".

For example, the "day" that the next season's episodes cover could take place after Jack has arrived in China, and after the CTU folks have learned of his wearabouts, and after they have already positioned a whole team of agents in whatever Chinese city Jack is being held in.

Thus the whole season could cover the 24 hours of Jack and the team's actions while we watch Jack's rescue, his recapture, his re-escape, etc. etc., as well as all the action on the US side as the CTU headquarters coordinates the activities, the US government fights diplomatically with China about the snatching, etc. Even Audrey and a lot of other regulars could already be in China to support the mission by the time "the" day starts.

They're NOT going to ship Jack Bauer ALL the way to China! No way you want to make a show detailing Bauer's escape from the ChiComs. As for Gregory Itzin, marvelous Nixon performance. But ny guess is, his President Logan character, smarmy and villanious and throughly reptilian, will never be impeached. Do you really think the country wants to air that dirty linen in public? Fat chance. "24" is a great show and I can't wait for Season Six in January 2007!

(((shudder))) You're right about that :)

There's a lot of John Kerry in Logan. The way Logan felt compelled to remind everyone he talked to that "I am the President of the United States!" That sounded just like Kerry reminding everyone that "I served in Vietnam".

Rush missed the part where they said that they patched her call through.

I didn't like this season's PC-approved terrorists: white guys. Although, the conspiracy with the weaselly, Nixon-looking president was good. Nixon was also a phony conservative, treasonous piece of garbage.

Yea, like a boatfull of Chinese can hold Jack Bauer back. I figure the next season starts with Jack skippering that boat back into a U.S. port with a school of sharks following close behind.
